Monty Python's Terry Gilliam (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) directs this wild, wild version of the stories of Baron Munchausen, pushing the limits of 1989 special effects technology to bring us such sights as a horse divided in half and running around in two parts, and a giant Robin Williams with his head flying off his shoulders. Basically, this is a treat for Gilliam fans, as the sustaining idea of the film runs out of steam, and manic energy alone keeps the momentum going. Casual viewers might find it tedious after awhile. There are nice parts for fellow Python Eric Idle, as well as Sting, Alison Steadman, and Uma Thurman as a dazzlingly beautiful Venus on a half-shell. Gilliam had greater artistic and commercial success with Brazil, The Fisher King, and 12 Monkeys. --Tom Keogh

Summary: Good movie 2010-08-02
Comment: I have seen this movie numerous times. It makes me laugh everytime. It's a cross between the movie "Time Bandits" and a "Monty Python" episode. If you like either of those you'll probaly like this movie.

Summary: A very enjoyable movie 2010-05-24
Comment: A friend of mine forced me to watch this movie. It had such a slow start that I was initially upset with him but it really picked up the pace and I was sad to see it end. I enjoyed the characters and the story. I would have given it five stars if it weren't for the slow start.

I really enjoy Monty Python's humor and this movie is even better than the Flying Circus TV show.

Summary: Absolutely brilliant! 2010-04-12
Comment: This has to be one of my favorite films. It starts with the siege of Vienna by the Turks, where a play is interrupted by Baron Munchausen. He says the Turkish sultan is angry with him. This anger is the cause of the war, and he's going to set things right. The recollection of the Baron's run-in with the Sultan is a delicious exercise in absurdity which introduces his lost servants: Berthold, the fastest man alive; Adolphus, who has amazing vision and is a crack shot; Albrecht, who has enormous strength; and Gustavus, who has powerful lungs.

From there, the story takes flight (literally) to the moon and back, to the depths of Mt. Vesuvius, to the belly of a collosal fish, and back to Vienna.

Along the way, we meet an incredibly talented cast of actors portraying wild characters. Two stand out: Robin Williams in an uncredited performance as the mad king of the Moon, and Oliver Reed chewing the scenery as the grumpy god, Vulcan. Uma Thurman is, of course, breathtakingly beautiful.

The most charming thing for me was that the Baron seems to shape reality with his stories. You'll quickly see that actors playing the gods, goddesses and servants you meet later in the story have duel roles; they're also playing "actors" in a play performed in besieged Vienna -- a play about Baron Munchausen. So this story has layers and layers of story and fantasy wrapped around each other.

One word of caution: If you are a parent of young children, and don't want to have to explain what the words "orgasms" and "whore" mean, then think twice about sharing it with your kids. I wasn't expecting that language. My 11-year old asked about the language, my 7-year-old was too enthralled by the story to care. But I found this movie a delight all around. I think you will, too.

Summary: The Terry Gilliam Fantasy Trilogy Goes out with a Bang! 2010-03-31
Comment:

In the 19th century, it seems a small town has been invaded by murderous Turks as the town's only hope is an aristocratic old traveler named Baron Karl Fredrick Munchausen (John Neville) as he travels with the help of a young girl named Sally (Sarah Polly) and a speedy bumbler named Berthold (Eric Idle in two roles) as they go off to find some crew members to help him save the town as they travel from the moon, meeting bizarre creatures to all the way inside the stomach of a Monstro-esque giant fish.

Brilliant comedy-fantasy adventure from Terry Gilliam is the last of the major fantasy trilogy that began with "Time Bandits" in 1981 then became better with 1985's dark "Brazil" and finally this movie as it went out with a bang. The film co-stars Uma Thurman, Jonathan Pryce, Robin Williams and Oliver Reed, it's a unique and hilarious Monty Python-esque cartoonish adventure brought to life thanks to the unique imagination of Monty Python member who co-wrote along with "Brazil" writer Charles McKeowen and it's a pure work of art. The performances are quite superb, Brazil's Michael Kamen does the wonderous score and so are Richard Conway's special effects such as the memorable scene where Munchausen dances with Venus, this movie is not for everyone or tastes but it's a must see who loves his films and who enjoys a good fantasy movie.

This Blu-Ray offers this masterpiece the look and sound it needed in great high def. The Extras are great like the BD exclusive map of Baron Munchausen's world with Trivia and extras like 3 part documentary, Storyboard sequences, audio commentary and deleted scenes.
