Summary: Numbs the Pain Long enough to get my Daughter Back to sleep 2008-03-15
Comment: I bought a baby orajel twin pack while pregnant. Now that my daughter is full-on teething at 6 months, I was very glad that I had it on hand. My Doctor at first recommended tylenol and motrin, but later told me they were just able to bring down her fever and not really helping with teething pain. I hadn't noticed much more sleep (for either of us) with Tylenol or Motrin, except in the very early stages of teething. Although Tylenol worked better for pain relief. I had tried Hylands Teething tablets but had only seen minimal improvement, and mostly in the early stages of teething. When my Dr. found out that I was giving the hylands, she had a FIT because it also has essence of belladona. However I have done lots of research online and feel that her opinion of hylands is based on lack of knowledge of the product.
I turned to Orajel, despite a friend who warned me that "it is a huge no-no and will cause your child's tongue to numb and she will choke on it." This sounded much like an internet hoax to me, so I started to do my own research and found many physician reviews and online sources that cite Orajel to be a good product, and that with the PROPER AMOUNT USED, the risk of numbing the throat is a small one. The packaging clearly states to use a PEA SIZED amount and also states how often. I found that I was only needing to apply the orajel 3-4 times a day in order to get a numbing effect strong enough to allow my daughter to get some rest, both for naps and for bedtime. Each parent has to make their own decision, but when you see your child in constant pain, and no one is sleeping, You may make a decision like me, and decide to use whatever you feel safe using. Orajel is working well for us. There is no miracle cure for teething but this offers some relief.
Also, the other reviewer who warns of the dangers, seems to have gone to all the websites she can and copy and paste the same review over and over again. That frustrates me and I feel that she is trying to scare people away from the product unnecessarily. There are so many things that mom's have to worry about today, and if you are like me, you have to start taking them with a grain of salt and making the best decisions you can while still being realistic. Teethers, Cold Rags, and Frozen Fruit work well while baby is awake, but when it's time to get some sleep, those things are no longer practical. My daughter was so sore from teething that she stopped nursing and taking a pacifier at the height of the teething. It was terrible. Orajel made her comfortable enough to take the pacifier and to nurse again. I was so relieved! Good luck!

Summary: DANGEROUS! 2007-02-01
Comment: Baby orajel numbs the back of the baby's throat...no matter how little you use. This can lead to the baby choking, making the process even more painful and annoying. Skip the orajels and get some Hyland's teething tablets. You can get them at a drugstore, wal-mart, kmart, or off the internet. They are inexpensive and they even knocked my baby out(they have chamomile)! Smaller kids have to have them rubbed around in their mouths until they dissolve, but at 6 months, my baby still loves them and will chew them up on her own. If that doesn't work, invest in a mesh baby fresh food feeder and put frozen fruit in it. Peaches work great.
