Product Description

Take your baby with you wherever you go: the Original Baby Bjorn makes it an easy, handsfree experience.
Amazon.com Review

Having spent nearly the last five decades innovating ideas for infants and toddlers, BabyBjörn is consistently tweaking their products to meet parents' high standards of quality, functionality, and safety. So it's no surprise that this BabyBjörn Baby Carrier Original is an international favorite.

Perfect for dads on the go
Padded shoulder straps make it perfect for dads on the go.
Knowing the strain that can come with frequently carrying a 26-, 15-, or even 8-pound baby, BabyBjörn developed this carrier with wide, padded shoulder straps that help to evenly distribute baby's weight. (You should ensure that the straps are adjusted correctly each time you put the carrier on, as baby's size changes and other users may have moved them.) Taller or bigger parents may want to consider buying the larger shoulder straps (sold separately) or the BabyBjörn Baby Carrier Active that provides adjustable lumbar support.

facing outward
When infants face outward, the built-in head support for newborns folds down in front.
A size adjustment buckle allows BabyBjörn's carrier to grow with baby—from as early as 8 pounds and at least 21 inches (about one week old) to a maximum weight of 25 pounds. Newborns first face inward using the adjustable head support to keep them stable, while older babies face outward with the head support folded down in front of them. The unique design allows the front piece to be easily removed so as not to wake a sound sleeping baby when taking off the carrier. The material is machine-washable cotton and the carrier comes in a variety of colors.

Another great feature of BabyBjörn carriers is their straightforward assembly and suggested adjustments based on baby's size and weight. This makes it easy for one person to manage baby and carrier when no one else is available to help.

Comfortable Carrying and Easy Adjustment
Carrying baby in your arms can be a wonderful bonding experience, but it can also strain the muscles in your back, shoulders and neck. That's why the Original BabyBjorn is designed to evenly distribute baby's weight, resulting in less stress and pressure on your body. When adjusted correctly, the padded shoulder straps allow you to comfortably carry a baby weighing at least eight pounds and 21 inches (about one week old) to a maximum weight of 25 pounds. It's also easy to slip on and buckle the Original BabyBjorn, even without assistance, and all the necessary adjustments can conveniently be made from the front.

Supports Growing Babies
The Original BabyBjorn offers firm support that holds your baby's legs and arms in a physiologically correct position to protect his or her back and head. When your baby is a little older and has a stronger neck, the neck-rest can be folded down and you can adjust the seat height so that the child can face forward and look around--something curious babies love while you're cooking dinner, cleaning the house, or walking through the neighborhood. The unique design also allows the front piece to be easily removed so as not to wake a sound sleeping baby when you're taking off the carrier.

Easy-Care, Eco-Friendly Construction
The recipient of several awards, including the 1999 Silver Award and Design of the Decade ISDA, which honors the 36 top products of the decade, this BabyBjorn is both reliable and easy to care for. It can be machine washed separately in warm water, with a gentle, bleach-free detergent, and hung to dry. The Original BabyBjorn is also approved in accordance with the Oeko-Tex Standard 100, class 1, eco-certification, so you can trust that it's safe for baby.

Summary: don't waste your money on an impractical and unhealthy carrier like this 2008-05-12
Comment: I have had four baby carriers. We received a Bjorn (actually 2!) at baby showers. Of the four, I found this one to be the least comfortable and most difficult to take on and off. Based on my experience I'd say that the Bjorn is good for one thing - going for a walk with a very small baby.

My daughter cried whenever I put her in the Bjorn (unlike the other baby carriers). At first I thought that was because she was picking up on *my* discomfort. However, it was when our pediatrician told me that the Bjorn is not healthy for babies (because it locks baby hips in an unhealthy position and also because the out-facing position prevents them from being able to turn away from difficult stimulus) that I realized it wasn't just me ... she really disliked it too!

There are other carriers that cost the same but are more durable, hold babies for longer (up to 40 lbs.), more comfortable for mom and dad, are more versatile (can be worn front, back, and side depending on how you place the straps), and sit the baby in an appropriate position for their physical (and emotional) development.

Check out the Ergocarrier. When I wear my baby in front in the Ergo I can nurse her in public (really w/o anybody being the wiser). When I wear her in back in the Ergo I can cook dinner safely, clean house, grocery shop, even pick things up off of the floor knowing that she is securely and safely in place. You can't do this with the Bjorn.

Summary: There are better options than the bjorn 2008-05-01
Comment: I used the bjorn A LOT before I knew there were better options. The bjorn is only comfortable for carrying babies under about 15lbs for short periods of time. I didn't feel like my baby was secure in this carrier. The bjorn is not comfortable or safe for babies as it puts the baby in an unnatural position by placing all of their weight on their spine. There are better options available (wraps, ring slings, becos, ergos, etc.) that are more comfortable and safe for baby.

Summary: Love it, love it, love it... 2008-04-06
Comment: I got this one as the baby's shower gift and LOVE it. It does save my hands and my back. I can carry my baby everywhere with me and still be able to do chores (I have a colicky baby so I cannot leave her on the swing for long time). It's so simple to use and very well-designed for the safety of the child. I have only one suggestion: I don't think it would fit a big child though even it says that it can carry a child up to 25 lbs. You may want to try the Sport-Active style if your child is 20 lbs or bigger. Overall, I still recommend this one to anyone.

Summary: spinal compression 2008-03-19
Comment: i hate the bbj for several reasons & i look forward to the day when scientific evidence of the damage it does will be enough to pull it off the market.
1) the seat is too narrow, putting all of baby's weight onto the crotch, contributing to spinal compression. it is especially damaging to boys as the weight rests entirely on his testicals.
2) the legs are left to dangle stright down (see above), which does not promote proper hip development. in indigenous cultures the baby is worn with his legs spread or froggy-style, with belly contact against the wearer's body. this position allows the hip balls to properly connect to the socket. this also allows for baby's weight to be distributed across the entire bottom & thighs. can you imagine straddling a bicycle seat all day & not being able to touch your feet to take the weight off your crotch?
3) facing out for extended periods is not healthy for little ones. the world is big & too much stimulus can quickly overwhelm a baby, who is unable to turn away & bury his face in your chest. it is also vital for a bby to be able to see your face & gauge your reactions to people & events. they learn how to interact with the world by watching you, but if they are thrust out in front of you like a ship's head, this is impossible.

invest in a mei tai or other similar carrier, NOT the bjorn.
