The Bebe Sounds Monitor is designed to allow you to listen to your developing baby's heartbeat--just place the unit on your belly and use the headset. Using your own tape recorder and the recording cable, you can record your "womb sounds" or your own heartbeat to calm your newborn after birth. Unfortunately, the monitor picks up an amount of extraneous noise, making it much better in theory than in execution. Several moms had a hard time locating a heartbeat at all, while others who did find theirs became frustrated after losing it just two minutes later (which can be scary for any expecting mom). Even a small movement of the headphone cord caused a loud noise (ouch!), and it seemed that the clicking of the on/off button was heard more clearly than the kicking, hiccups, or heartbeat of the baby.With the Deluxe Gift Set, you can also talk and read to your baby, using the special microphone and speakers, or play the included cassette tape or CD of classical music. To get hooked up, secure the maternity support belt around your belly, put the speakers in the pockets, and plug the cord into your own stereo. While the music itself is nice, most moms had a hard time relaxing with the requisite belt and cords. This Deluxe Gift Set includes one Bebe Sounds Fetal Monitor, two headsets, instructions, a recording cable, a Cuddly Classics Mozart Connection cassette tape (and a CD), a jack adapter, one maternity belt, fetal speakers, and a fetal microphone. Comment: My wife and I are expecting a little one, and it is so great to be able to sit at home and listen to my baby's heartbeat, it is also wonderful to know that i can talk to the little one and they are able to listen to me and get to know daddy's voice as well as mommy. I love sitting in the evening with the belly speakers and singing to our little one.

Summary: NOTE: Playing music requires your own CD (or MP3) player 2007-01-24
Comment: I got this specifically to play music. Unfortunately, I missed the little tidbit in the description about needing to provide the CD player and was then surprised to find that the CD player in our bedroom doesn't have a headphone output! The iPod will suffice (once I get around to ripping my classical CDs), but it put a little bit of a crimp in my "instant gratification" hopes!

Summary: Great for communicating to and stimulating your baby! 2006-12-13
Comment: When I purchased this product, I didn't expect much from the fetal heart listener. I am a labor and delivery nurse, and I know how hard it can be to listen to the baby's heart rate without a commercial doppler, so I didn't expect much. I was actually surprised that I could hear the baby's heart (at 30 weeks) which did come through sounding just like when you use a stethoscope to heart someon'e heart.....except the sound was very faint and you have to concentrate! I can see how someone not trained to listen to fetal heart sounds would have a very difficult time!
However, I actually purchased the set so that I could play music for the baby, because I have seen much research on how classical music promotes fetal brain development, and I wanted the convenience of using "headphones" designed just for that purpose. They were comfortable and easy to use and worked wonderfully! It also enabled me to play the music for the baby while I watched TV, so I don't have to listen to the music if I don't want to. The set came with cd's and suggestions for how, when and how long to play the music, which I found very helpful.
As an added bonus, I got the microphone to use so I can talk to and sing to the baby which also worked well....although I believe that playing the music is more important!
Bottom line is......if you want a product for playing music that is easy to use....it's worth the price! (And everything else is just extra.)

Summary: don't waste your money!! 2006-10-27
Comment: i don't normally write reviews but this thing is a piece of junk and i wanted to do whatever i could to keep others from wasting their money. all you hear is generic noise. i am now 36 weeks....one month from delivery and i never heard a heartbeat. i would always try right after getting back from the doctor's office and hearing a heartbeat. nothing.

Summary: Never heard a single heartbeat, even with twins inside. 2006-08-26
Comment: Tried right up to a week before delivery and never was able to hear either of our babies heartbeats (twins). We could hear them moving around from time to time, but that was about it.
The speakers are fun though. Every time my wife would hook them up it would get the babies kicking all over the place. So it was worth it just for that to us, but I suppose if you held a pair of headphones on there it would work just as well.
