Editorial Review

A little over 3 inches long, this petite dumbbell rattle looks like something out of a fantasy story about nurseries of another age. Yet it is--once you get beyond the matter of $50--a perfectly practical nursery toy. Babies will love the highly polished silver just as much as their indulgent parents or grandparents will (and let's face it, who is it really for?). They'll be able to grip it easily--and they won't be able to break it. A small piece of loose metal inside provides the sound effects. --Richard Farr

Summary: Enjoyable toy for baby 2002-11-14
Comment: Our baby loves his rattle! We normally keep it in the car and it keeps him occupied while in his car seat. He also loves to put it in his mouth--it seems like a good teething toy (baby's almost 6 mos). While it might be a hazard like another reviewer said, our baby's muscle control is pretty good so we're not worried about him smacking himself in the face. Once he starts to throw it though, it may be time to retire it.

Summary: Nice new baby keepsake; not a useful rattle 2002-08-23
Comment: We got this as a present and it is a very pretty little keepsake. It goes well with other silver keepsakes we have, like a little silver covered photo album and silver piggy bank. However, this rattle has not really captured out 5.5 month old baby's interest, although other rattling toys have. Further, the few times she has played with it we were alarmed by its damage potential. When she waves it around (flails) there is a good chance she will knock herself in the head with it. This can happen with any rattle, but most are not made of hard silver. Second, when she is flailing it around, there is a good chance she will fling it, and it can accidentally hit a plate, glass or other breakable. Again this can happen with any rattle, but most are not heavy silver. Finally, other rattles are also good teethers. I don't want her teething on a silver rattle. So we have retired it to the top of her bureau where it is very attractive among the other keepsakes.
