Summary: Snap beads should hold better 2008-04-09
Comment: Beads were just in a clear plastic bag when I opened the Amazon box.---no product packaging as other brands have and what we are all used to seeing on store shelves. Thought it was odd.
Real complaint: Pieces do not hold together very well. You could nudge the pieces and they come unlinked. It takes no effort to pull apart. As a result, not very challenging and my son gets quickly bored. They need to have tighter connectors. I bought this one because it had 24 pieces, when I probably should have gone with a better brand name. We have played with this type of toy before at the library and my son loved it, but I didn't know who made them. Guess I bought the wrong brand. Very disappointing.

Comment: These are great toys for encouraging hand-eye coordination and bilateral (two-handed) play. You can help your child identify or group by color or shape.
Different manufacturers make similar beads in a variety of styles and shapes, including Fisher Price and Sassy (Sassy Baby's Bucket of Beads Scented).
The 16-piece version of the Edushape Snap Beads has won several awards: 2004 Parents' Choice Recommended product; 2004, 2005 National Parenting Center Seal of Approval; and 2004 Creative Child Magazine Creative Toy Award.
For kids with special needs:
Bilateral arm/hand play is important for kids with cerebral palsy, Down syndrome (accompanied by low muscle tone), hypotonia, limb-kinetic apraxia, dyspraxia, and other muscle and movement disorders.
At 3.5, my son (who has cerebral palsy) still has to work to pull these beads apart, although it's fairly easy for him to put them together.
Babies and some toddlers may be able to amuse themselves with this toy. As a child gets older, you may have to come up with more creative games for encouraging them to use the beads.
Therapeutic play suggestions:
Hold each bead just out of reach of the child at various angles (e.g. sit behind your child and hold up a bead so that the child has to turn his body and extend his arm to reach for the bead, then switch sides for the next bead).
For children who can stand with one arm supporting themselves on a table, position the child next to a waist-high table or couch. Put all the pieces on the floor (on both sides of the child) so that the child has to bend or squat down to pick them up.
