Given the Spanish name for cucumber with tomatoes and potatoes for relatives, this egg shaped ambrosial fruit is definitely the black sheep of the family. This offbeat native of Peru with smooth satiny light yellow skin is more aptly called a "mellow fruit". Mellow it is. It's subtle flavors range from honeydew and cantaloupe to a fragrant peachy banana taste. It's soft apricot colored pear-like fruit brings a delicate balance to tart fruit salsas, smooth creamy hints to seafood sauces and is a natural when paired with prosciutto.
