Summary: Great 2008-03-18
Comment: I didn't plan on writing a review however I can't stand it when someone totally misrepresents a product in a review. I have this product and have used it with two babies. This doesn't restrict airflow at all comparing it to a zipper is way off base, in fact there are air vents at the baby's head to make sure there is plenty of airflow. The top part where the baby's head and body are is open at all times, if it is closed "like a zipper" you didn't read the directions carfully enough. Most people use these slings mainly during their child's newborn and young infant stages. Playtex offers a "hip hammock" for when your baby is no longer a newborn. Mine is great for going to the store and I have even used it for nursing, and the zoo and a visit to an aquarium (strollers weren't permitted). I got this on sale as well as a hip hammock for less than what the other slings cost. This was a great sling for me.

Summary: Many Better options out there 2008-01-30
Comment: After seeing friends use this carrier in an awkward manner and knowing my own experience with many other styles of baby carriers, I can confidently say that there are many better options out there than the Sling Rider! With a sling, the idea carrier would pull the baby close to your body's center of gravity. With the slingrider, the baby's weight is suspended across the body in a manner that pulls the weight away from the wearer (like someone else compared to a purse). Over time that alone can cause back problems for the wearer. Another must for a safe carrier is good airflow, visibility of the child, and correct positioning. The slingrider only allows for one position compared to many carriers which offer a variety of positions. If your child is prone to reflux there is no way to adjust your child in the slingrider to an upright position, and as your child gets heavier, there is no ability to use this carrier in a hip or back carry necessitating that you purchase another carrier then to meet your child's needs (meaning more money!) This carrier has elastic at the top which to some new parents may seem like a plus (the idea that it will help keep the child in) when in fact, it can be a danger because it can literally close the top of the sling over the baby (like zipping your child into a duffle bag). Even with the mesh sides, the airflow to your child is not ideal. Additionally, because of the way the carrier is shaped, it places the baby's cradle position with the chin to the chest which can cause an infant trouble breathing and not be recognized by the parent in time to prevent injury because of the lack of visibility.
Another negative to this carrier is the method of adjustment. Because it is a belt adjustment (like a backpack) across the back, it can create pressure points on the wearer's back making it very uncomfortable to wear. A more ideal carrier spreads the weight over a larger area.

Recommendations: An unpadded ring sling like Ellaroo, a fitted pouch like hotsling or peanut shell, a mei tai, or even a backpack carrier like the Ergo with an infant insert.
