Sugarbonen are flat, almond-shaped candies made of the highest quality dark Belgian chocolate with a fine sugar coating and are available in a wide variety of beautiful colors for every occasion. "Sugarbonen" literally means "sugar beans" and is a European specialty dating back to the 14th century. During the 16th and 17th centuries, sugarbonen were made only for royalty and the nobility as sugar was a delicacy and extremely expensive. After the discovery of sugar cane, sugarbonen became available to the general public. As Belgian, Italian and French people shared their traditions, the giving of sugarbonen expanded from births and christenings to include weddings and recently the giving of sugarbonen has grown to include any special event or occasion or for no occasion at all, simply a special treat to be enjoyed by those who desire the finer things in life.
