Summary: Great product! 2008-07-01
Comment: This is a great gate. The alarm is great! It let's know if you or someone else has forgotten to close the gate behind them. Plus it locks on the bottom and top.

Summary: So far so good 2008-06-23
Comment: We've only had this gate about 10 days, but so far so good. It has a good amount of room to walk through. I can see why some people say that the latch is difficult to use, especially if you try to use your non dominant hand. But it just took me a little practice in the beginning to get the hang of it and now I am fine with it.
The one thing that I don't like though is that the door does not swing open both directions. So if you are on the side that it swings out, you have to step backwards to make room for the gate. Not a huge deal, but is slightly annoying.
We are using the gate to divide off two rooms but will probably move it to use at the bottom of the stairs once we get an extension. I am buying an 8" extension direct from the manufacturer (Kolcraft). It costs $14.99 including shipping. I don't know where else you'd be able to get the extension. I got the phone number from the box. The customer service rep mentioned they also have 4" and 12" extensions, but I didn't ask the price on those.
BTW, we have a 14 month old baby and a 75 lb. dog. The baby is able to pull herself up to standing, on the gate. The gate seems sturdy so far to hold her weight (which is probably about 19 lbs.). She does not try to climb the gate yet. She is able to crawl through the gate fine when it is open, even with the bar. Our dog has never attempted to climb the gate either and he walks through just fine as well.

Summary: Difficult to use 2008-06-13
Comment: I returned this item because the latch was extremely difficult to use. It required too much time and attention, was not operable with one hand. I much prefer the Evenflo Simple Step Pressure Gate that we purchased in the past. From now on, I'll stick with that one. It costs about the same and has an extension so that it fits our doorways and allows our cats to squeeze through.

Summary: Solid. Simple. Inexpensive (at first). 2008-05-15
Comment: This is a fine gate. Solid, strong, dependable. It's easy to install and very functional. It fits nicely in doorways. I saw a review that said they could shift the gate to one side to make a cat opening. I don't know that I would recommend this (the manufacturer does not) - plus your cat might not be narrow enough for that gap. We're still experimenting with "cat passage", so maybe I'll update this review when I discover more.
Please note - it is unlikely that it will work in a hallway without the add on extentions (measure first, buy second!). These extentions are expensive and must be ordered separately (and don't come with free shipping).
It's a great way to close off a room that you may want to keep the door open to. I think there was some warnings about using this at the top of stairs, which I would agree with due to the lack of mounting hardware. There are little cups that can help secure it to drywall, but I don't think they provide the sort of bomb proof secrutiy you might want above stairs. I suppose you could make your own sort of braces, but I think you might consider a different product for top of stairs applications. For the bottom of stairs, it should suffice.
The only thing (other than expensive extentions) that I dislike, is the sharp corners to the gate itself. This part is only exposed when the gate is opened, however, if your little one likes to play with the gate (when it is opened and you are supervising) he/she will get banged up on the edge of the door. We've also got a Evenflo gate, which is less sturdy, but much friendlier on the little guy's shins.

Summary: Works perfectly 2008-05-03
Comment: I got this gate to keep my baby out of his big sister's room, which is full of small toys. It installed very easily, and is very secure. My daughter is 7, and has a little bit of a hard time opening it by herself, but we figured out a way using a wooden block. Her difficulty is not a negative for the gate of course, since it's supposed to be hard for kids to open it! I was confused at first by the gate not latching before it was installed, but I hadn't read the tag very prominently attached saying that would happen until it was properly installed! Once it was installed it latched very well. The alarm works wonderfully, very quiet at first, then just loud enough to get your attention without being annoying. I highly recommend this gate!
