Product Review
Product Description

The Diaper Genie Twistaway Disposal System is the only diaper disposal product that individually wraps diapers in a triple-barrier film, sealing away odor and germs. Refills have a baby-fresh scent and can be used for babies of all ages.
Editorial Review

Everyone agrees: dirty diapers stink. If parents could, they'd probably call in a genie to magic away all evidence of those poopy dipes. But for those who have not found an enchanted lamp lately, the new and improved Diaper Genie is a pretty good alternative. The basic idea is that you drop the used diaper into the bin, give the lid a few twists, and voila! The offensive item has been sealed away into a scented plastic liner. When the bin is full, open the base of the Genie and dump the sausaged, wrapped diapers into the garbage. No odor, no germs, no fuss! The newly designed version features more convenient one-handed operation and a built-in cutting system (with safety latch to keep little fingers out) for easy and quick disposal. Inserting the refills has also been made easier--just remove the old refill, plop in the new one, and tie a knot. Includes one Stage 1 refill (for breast- or formula-fed babies only). Assembly required. --Emilie Coulter

Comment: I bought the diaper genie for my twins and used it for 3 months. My biggest complaint is, that it is hard to open (you often need two hands) and it is incredibly loud. You have to shove the diaper down and the bags really crinkle loudly, then you close the lid, which is heavy and if you are not careful will slam down. Then you turn the dial, which makes loud clicking sounds. My babies startle every single time. I just purchased the Decor plus diaper pail - so much better. It uses a similar cartridge system for the bags AND you can get them biodegradable now, so if you are using biodegradable diapers it makes all the more sense. Plus, once you are done with diapers, you can use this as a regular trash can, whereas the genie becomes useless.

Comment: A friend gave us a Diaper Genie and a pack of bags before our first baby was born. We had a hard time just figuring out how to get the bags in it properly, and a few test-uses convinced us that this was a piece of useless junk. We gave it away before the baby came, and bought a Diaper Champ instead. The Champ is far and away easier to use, and you can use any trash bag in it--you aren't required to buy Playtex's bag system. If I could've given the Diaper Genie zero stars, I would have.

Summary: Couldn't wait to run out of bags to toss it out! 2008-05-01
Comment: We bought a diaper champ which we use downstairs and the Diaper Genie for upstairs. Well... the Diaper Champ's been great but I as soon as I run out of Diaper Genie bags I tossed this diaper pail into the trash can, it would not keep the smells contained, you have to push the nasty diaper down with your hand and the bags are too noisy for 2-3 a.m diaper changes. I replaced it with a Safety First diaper pail which has been great so far after 1 month of use.

Summary: Not worth the money 2008-04-16
Comment: I found this to be a huge waste of money. The bags were difficult to put in and the larger the diapers the harder to twist them in the pail. The worst part was the odor. It smelled disgusting no matter what I did to eliminate it. I finally threw it away and for my newest baby I bought a Diaper Champ which I love and find to be a cheaper, better option.

Summary: Advice from a Toddler's mother 2008-04-13
Comment: We have owned the original diaper genie since my daughter was born (she is now 2). From the start we only used the diaper genie for poopy diapers. We bought a regular trash can with a lid from Linens & Things (Umbra grand can - $16.99) and used that for non-poopy diapers. Originally we only had to change both trash cans every two weeks or so. We lived in a 2 bedroom loft style apartment and never had an issue with odors even though both diaper pails were in our living room.

Now that my daughter is older I still throw the non-poopy diapers in whatever trash can is closest: kitchen, bathroom, bedroom. I never have a problem with odor, I change the bedrooom, bathroom trash cans out every 2 weeks or so. The kitchen trash gets changed every 2 or 3 days.

I do have some issues with odor now on the poopy diapers with the diaper genie since my daughter has developed some food allergies and intermittently has diarrhea. I just put the poopy diapers in a grocery store produce bag and tie before inserting them into the genie and that has solved the problem. However, on the days that she has 5 BMs, I do get a little irritated with the whole push and twist process. I also have to change the diaper genie bag at least every week and occasionally spray with Lysol.

We are expecting #2 so I am looking for a 2nd diaper pail for the nursery. After reading the reviews of the other products out there I am pretty happy with the diaper genie but may try another product this time around. I agree that the refills are expensive but if you only use it for poopy diapers then you will go through far fewer refills. I only have to change refills every 6 - 8 weeks.

I also wish there was a diaper pail out there that would eliminate the twisting but still find a way to seal each diaper individually and used regular trash bags. I'll keep searching.
