Summary: CAUTION! 2008-09-28
Comment: We bought this gate and loved it until last Sunday my 18 month old had his pinky fingertip severed off from this gate. He was coming up the stairs and his older brother wung it open from the top and the little guy had his pinky in the space between the gate and the wall(not the side that opens) and the pressure took it right off. Please beware and be careful.

Summary: Great Gate!!! 2008-09-18
Comment: This baby gate is the best! My father-in-law installed it for us and it only took him 40 minutes to put it up(not 2 hours like some other reviews have posted) We LOVE the light..it is a nice extra feature! My baby and I have so much more fun upstairs now that we have this gate up...it feels good to know our baby is safe! I would recommend this gate...it's well made and looks nice! There are a lot of baby gates out there and I've read a lot of reviews and this was the one I picked...I'm glad I did!

Summary: Great gate but not the best quality 2008-08-27
Comment: We installed this gate about a month ago. I love the features. The handle is easy to use and the green/red indicator is handy to know that it is locked safely. I do have two issues with the gate that I wanted to share with others. After only being used for a week, the motion detector sensor that turns the light on and off stopped working. We did nothing to break it, it simply stopped working. The good news is that I contacted the manufacturer and after they confirmed it was under 1 year old a full warranty was honored and the company sent out a brand new light bar set in a few days. So, good job, to the manufacturer for replacing the part. But, it was surprising the part would stop working so easily. The second thing I wanted to point out was that once you go through the gate and swing it behind you to close it, it sometimes will swing past the "catch" and swing openly over the stairwell. As long as you don't use too much force in shutting it, it will properly latch. But, if you "slam" it shut and walk away, it has a tendency to swing past the catch and end up open, over the stairwell. Obviously this is a huge safety concern. You've got to be careful with this gate.
All in all, we do really like this gate. The company stood behind a defect. I'll give them a second chance. Maybe the first light bar being broken was a fluke. Again, the handle works great and it is secure. Just don't slam it shut! Hope this helps!

Summary: Solid gate but not flawless 2008-08-25
Comment: This gate has been installed for a month in our home and so far it is working out well. I purchased the gate b/c of its metal construction and the light feature. However, the light on my gate has never worked. We didn't realize this until it was fully installed (I didn't want to put the heavy D batteries in the gate until it was already screwed into a post), so it would have been very inconvenient and frustrating to deinstall and send back. Despite this giant flaw, I am pleased with how solid the gate is and how easily it opens and snaps into locked position with a gentle push. It would be nice if all of the accompanying hardware would be metal too -- I fear that some of the plastic hinge pieces won't last as long as the gate itself.
I have yet to install a second purchased gate at another staircase, so I am hoping the light feature will work on the other one.

Summary: Good until it broke too soon 2008-06-05
Comment: We recieved the Safety 1st Smartlight Stair gate as a baby shower gift. We were very excited to set it up. Our son started crawling at 6 months and we had just set it up a few weeks earlier. My husband found it took a little adjusting to get the gate to sit right, but once it was on it swung easily and didn't look as "ugly" as some of the other gates on the market.
Guests found it hard to open the gate, so our son was never able to open it on his own, which was good. We liked the light, it was by the stairs and when I got up to nurse him during the night it would light up as I walked by. However, 6 months after installation, the spring handle was broken. We now have to manually close the handle down, so that it locks closed. There are NO replacement parts for the handle. We took the gate off its hinges and stored it until the birth of our second child (about a year in storage. We put the gate back on the original hinges, but the light burnt out, we put new batteries in, but it still flashes, if we want we can by a whole new light bar and put that on the wall!!?? (the replacement light bar is priced reasonably including shipping, but at this point ...) Our second son is now 8 months old, after two weeks use, the PLASTIC hinges broke. So now we are waiting for replacement hinges (at our cost, on back order, but reasonably priced) to arrive so we can reinstall them.
The total time this gate has been used would roughly equal about 10 months.
Overall we were disapointed in the quality of the gate. After normal use it just keeps breaking. We feel it should last longer than the short time we used it for our first child. I don't have 50-60 dollars to replace a gate for each child I have. The customer service was not bad. We would not recommend this product.
