Summary: Functionally and esthetically elegant 2008-01-07
Comment: In trying to choose a crib, I found it difficult to examine the construction and other details of the cribs even when a floor model was available. Thus when we purchased the Sorelle Rosa over the weekend, I thought I'd share our findings out of the box.

The crib was generally well-packaged, with no missing and nicely bagged parts, and every piece of wood was in pristine condition. Unlike the photo, the Oak in Pine has a darker stain that looks more like the Antique Oak on the Sorelle Furniture website. The floor of the drawer is also finished in a matching veneer. We found the finish of the Pine to be much smoother than that of the Birch used for the Lana and Rita models. Pine is a softer wood though so we'd recommend it for gentle households only.

Weight-bearing wood pieces had metal screwing into metal. The drop-side tracks are completely hidden in the drop side (versus exposed or semi-hidden in the fixed sides). A metal piece slides in a plastic rail and a plastic piece slides in the metal rail... presumably reducing friction. The drawer also glides on coated metal rails.

The mattress support is a metal spring system (grid array of individual links with spring attachment to the sides versus fixed thin metal bars) that is supported from below. This results in completely hidden mattress supports (assuming you have a bed skirt) at the expense of some lateral motion.

Height adjustment is done by thumbscrew. If you're not good with spatial visualization or have trouble assembling a barbecue, you will probably want to solicit some help with assembling this crib. Given automated manufacturing processes, I don't understand how some crib reviewers could have an easy time with assembly while others need to add extra holes. While the wood pieces may appear symmetrical, there are tiny nail holes (at least in this model) that invariably indicate which side should face into the crib. The crib was made in Vietnam and included an CPSC compliance label dated July 2007.

We haven't assembled ours yet, but the floor model was sturdy, and smooth and quiet in operation. Be careful of where you push on the crib because pushing on a corner where fixed sides meet will always be less shaky than pushing on a corner involving the drop side. Lastly, the slats are also solidly mounted.

Good luck on your crib search! Although we bought ours at a local store (Amazon was out of stock), the best price we've seen online is about $250, no tax, free shipping (unless returned), with a good damage replacement policy.

Summary: Wonderful crib! 2007-09-24
Comment: My daughter is almost two years old, we have another baby on the way and this crib looks exactly the same as it did the day we bought it. We loved it for its hidden hardware and quiet drop-side. It was extremely sturdy in the store (which is more than I can say for the majority of cribs we looked at) and when we put it together, it was even sturdier. Also, our crib (though I can't promise that this one is the same) has a metal base for under the mattress, which is very nice, as opposed to the wood slats. The drawer slides out very nice, though it's pretty shallow, but no big deal. The mattress is a little difficult to lower, but I would expect that to be an issue with any crib. Aside from that, it's a wonderful crib and was worth every penny of the $230 we spent on it two years ago.
