Amazon Best of the Month, May 2008: Stephenie Meyer, creator of the phenomenal teen-vamp Twilight series, takes paranormal romance into alien territory in her first adult novel. Those wary of sci-fi or teen angst will be pleasantly surprised by this mature and imaginative thriller, propelled by equal parts action and emotion. A species of altruistic parasites has peacefully assumed control of the minds and bodies of most humans, but feisty Melanie Stryder won't surrender her mind to the alien soul called Wanderer. Overwhelmed by Melanie's memories of fellow resistor Jared, Wanderer yields to her body's longing and sets off into the desert to find him. Likely the first love triangle involving just two bodies, it's unabashedly romantic, and the characters (human and alien) genuinely endearing. Readers intrigued by this familiar-yet-alien world will gleefully note that the story's end leaves the door open for a sequel--or another series. --Mari Malcolm

Summary: Amazing and Unforgettable 2008-08-20
Comment: Earth has been invaded by parasitic souls. The souls think they are helping the humans by purging the Earth of violence; the resisting humans see it differently. Humans have become hosts for these parasites and been forced to relinquish control of their bodies and minds to the souls. The resisting humans see this as bad as murder, if not worse.
Wanderer is a soul who has chosen Earth as the setting for her ninth life. She is given the body of Melanie Stryder, a recently captured resister. Wanderer has been informed about the increased difficulties of a mature adult host, but she never expects for Melanie's mind to still be there. Melanie, always a fighter, refuses to give up. Instead, she tries to protect the humans she loves from Wanderer, lest a Seeker find them and make them into hosts for more parasites. But Melanie slips up and Wanderer gains knowledge of the existence of Jared, the man Melanie loves. Strangely though, Wanderer finds herself unable to completely separate her body's desires from her own, and she begins to fall in love with this human she's never met. Soon, an annoyingly persistent Seeker unites Melanie and Wanderer, and they set off to find the man they both love.
I will admit that after reading the slightly disappointing Breaking Dawn, I was afraid that Stephenie Meyer's writing had gone downhill, but after reading The Host, my faith was restored. Firstly, the idea behind this story, a science-fiction romance, was so unique that it immediately captured my interest. On top of that, the characters, especially Wanderer and Melanie, were so well developed that they actions were always easy to understand. Plus, the sense of desperation added in some action. I loved how everything fit together perfectly in the end, even thought that doesn't leave room for a sequel. The ending of the story, probably the last fifty pages or so, was my favorite part of this book, because that was when everything really came together; every character realized their importance and other conflicts were unexpectedly resolved. I don't think I could've asked for a better story than this; it was all I was hoping for from the incredible author of Twilight and more.
I loved this story and recommend it to all readers, whether they be fans of Stephenie Meyer/science-fiction/romances or not. Length shouldn't be an issue either; those 600 pages really flew by. I suggest everyone find a copy of The Host so they can read this amazing story for themselves.

Summary: A fun scifi romance 2008-08-20
Comment: This is a more adult piece of writing in comparison with her Twilight series. As with that series, this pulls you in and keeps you reading. She has some recurring themes, especially the love triangle, which seems repetitive after reading the Twilight series, but overall a very good read and well worth picking up if you're in the mood for an adventurous sci-fi with lots of romance.

Summary: a good book but not a must have book 2008-08-19
Comment: This is first book i read from Stephenie Meyer.
I catch it because the idea of the alien invasion and view humanity from a disctinct point of view, mixing souls and human emotions and how this affects Wanda and Melanie, attracts me, but i think that the book is a little slow for me.
I think that the idea of the book is a great idea, but the final look is less than it could be.
A good book, but not a must have.

Summary: Different but enjoyable 2008-08-19
Comment: The Host was hard for me to get into. It starts off very confusing, and I probably wouldn't have gone further if my sister hadn't recommended it (she and I have the same tastes) and if I hadn't liked the Twilight saga. Actually, I probably never would have gotten it. It sounded too weird. Anyways, the beginning is rough. Confusing and kinda weird. Very sci-fi. The book, for me, only picked up when Melanie would show Wanderer her memories of Jamie and Jared, which were not nearly often enough. Finally, though, once Wanderer made it to the caves, the book was really exciting, and I could hardly put it down for a second. I cried a lot. I was torn, not knowing what should happen. I was soooooo glad for the happy ending. I love happy endings! I really wish there would have been more scenes with Mel and Jared when she was actually Mel; not Mel AND Wanderer. It was obvious that Jared and Melanie loved each other, but we didn't get a lot of story on them. Not enough for me.
One trite point...why Wanda??? Ugh! That's worse than Reneesme:)
