Based on the books Lay This Laurel, by Lincoln Kirstein, and One Gallant Rush, by Peter Burchard, and the wartime letters of Robert Gould Shaw, the film tells the story of the 54th Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, an all-black unit comprising Northern freemen and escaped slaves. Under the command of Shaw (played by Matthew Broderick), the 54th served admirably in battle until they made their ultimate demonstration of bravery during the almost suicidal assault on the Confederate Fort Wagner in Charleston, South Carolina, on July 18, 1863. Glory achieves its powerful impact by meticulously setting up the terrible conditions under which these neglected soldiers fought, and by illuminating the tenacity of the human spirit from the oppression of slavery to the hard-won recognition of battlefield heroism. Although Denzel Washington deservedly won an Oscar for his supporting role as a runaway-slave-turned-soldier, Glory faced some tough competition at the 1989 Academy Awards (against popular hits like Driving Miss Daisy and Dead Poets Society) and was shut out of nearly all the major categories. Comment: This was a very impressive movie and I am glad that I bought it. If you read the history of this civil war battle first - you will enjoy the movie much better. I recommend the movie Glory.

Summary: GLORY,ABOVE THE REST. 2008-06-12
Comment: With no doubt the best Civil War picture ever made ,so far. The story of Robert Gould Shaw and his colored regiment,the 54th Massachusetts.Lincoln credited the black soldiers for turning the tide of the war for the Union victory.Glory is probably the most realistic of the Civil War films,Gettysburg is a good picture,but it seems like all the actor's are wearing fake beards,also, there is a blank spot to the whereabouts of Jeb Stuart in the film.Gods and Generals,a flat out boring film and I was disappointed in Robert Duvalls role as Lee,not so much the acting,but the lack of,strictly a cameo role for Duvall.Glory is a classic movie overall not only for history but a milestone in the entire motion picture industry,I think I've seen this movie at least thirty five times,with superb acting.spectacular cinematography,accurate story and screenplay,wish there were a few more battle scenes,the grand finale made up for it leaving the viewer stunned.Denzel Washington won the oscar for best supporting actor,but I think Morgan Freeman was also in the running,excellent acting all around.(a classic war movie.)Col. Shaw says,Forbes! if you dont believe in what we're doing here,maybe you should'nt be a part of it.

Summary: One of the best movies ever made. 2008-06-03
Comment: There is also an educational version of the film that is edited only somewhat. My students, 6th graders, really enjoyed watching this film and it provided us with some great dialogue in class once it was done. I highly recommend seeing this film if you have not already.
