Honey, I Shrunk the Kids
Walt Disney Video Product Details |
Product Description
A busy inventor shrinks his kids to a quarter of an inch and throws them away in the trash by accident. Now their backyard has become a dangerous battleground as they face adversaries like a common ant a bee a sprinkler system and more. Studio: Buena Vista Home Video Release Date: 04/05/2005 Starring: Rick Moranis Marcia Strassman Run time: 93 minutes Rating: Pg Director: Joe Johnston Amazon.com
A deft balance between special effects, comedy, and family dynamics made this 1989 film a hit for Disney and spawned both a string of video sequels and a subsequent TV series. Moranis is endearing as the bumbling inventor/father of the Szalinski family. He inadvertently shrinks his own children then throws them out with the trash. They, along with the neighbor kids, must journey back across their own backyard, now an enormous, dangerous distance, to get back to the right height. Much is done with the perils of the lawn, from a wild deluge from the sprinklers to a nasty encounter with the lawnmower and numerous encounters with gigantic insects. A generally kid-friendly, inventive (no pun intended), and entertaining outing. --Keith Simanton

Summary: Fun movie, bad DVD 2008-12-22
Comment: Although it's a bit dated, Honey I Shrunk the Kids is still a fun family movie.
However, I'm disappointed with the DVD edition. First, the video is "fullscreen" 4:3. There is no widescreen option for newer 16:9 displays. Second, the video quality is poor - you can see many video artifacts such as noise on the display. It looks like you're watching a VHS videotape.
Your kids probably won't care about the picture quality, but it might bug the parents if you're watching along.

Comment: Honey, I Shrunk the Kids starring Rick Moranis was a childhood favorite of mine. This family film is pretty creative and funny. Moranis is good at playing the smart but naive goofball. Great to watch with family and friends, enjoy!

Summary: Good effects sans CGI 2008-03-20
Comment: I watched this a lot of times but never watched the 2 sequels (Honey I Blew Up the Kid, Honey We Shrunk Ourselves) after this. Still this original entertains me everytime I view it. Special effects weren't bad in this 1989 film considering that CGI weren't used. Some scaling though needs improvement. Matt Frewer as the obnoxious neighbour delivered the funny parts well. You wouldn't go wrong with this Disney movie.

Summary: No widescreen version! 2008-03-19
Comment: Too sad.
I have widescreen TV and this dvd is annoying.
It has only full screen format.
