The mysterious crystal that Millie brings aboard the Swordbreaker turns out to be a high-tech booby trap, capable of reconfiguring matter and space. The layout of the ship fluctuates wildly, making it impossible to find anything--including the bathroom. Millie discovers an old music box in a hidden room, and its tinkling melody (which is linked to his grandmother) enables Kain to find the crystal and destroy it. This farcical series takes a darker turn in the multipart episode that begins with "Friendship Scatters." Kain runs into his old pal Jesse in a resort pub, and, after an evening of heavy drinking, they set off to protect LaGuld Coporation cargo ships from space pirates. The pirates have captured a "Lost Ship," a relic of an ancient civilization with extraordinary powers that enable them to kill Jesse by attacking from beyond sensor range. As the Swordbreaker is also a Lost Ship, Kain can avenge his friend's death. But he knows he will have to face greater enemies--the maniacal head of the crime syndicate, Nightmare, and the deadly ship Nazard. Although the villains remain underdeveloped, director Takashi Watanabe handles the shift in tone deftly. Episodes: 9. "Toilet Fears," 10. "Vagrancy Decides," 11. "Friendship Scatters," 12. "Rain of Tears Ends." Unrated; suitable for ages 10 and up for minor sexual innuendoes, alcohol use, and some violence. --Charles Solomon

Summary: review from a new and hopelessly addicted Lost Universe fan 2001-02-05
Comment: This was the first time I'd watched any of the Lost Universe DVDs, and now I'm hopelessly addicted! I'd heard about this series awhile ago and had heard it described as "Slayers in Space." Even though I was a huge fan of the Slayers series, this title didn't really spark any interest for the longest time. However, on a whim, I purchased this DVD one day, and I have to say... I really, really love it!!!! Even though I hadn't seen any previous episodes, I wasn't lost or confused when it came to the plot, making this still a great buy for newbies to Lost Universe as well as for the show's veterans. The characters are what make this series really shine. There's Kane, the cool psy-blade wielding, cape-wearing hero, Millie, the "best sharp-shooter in the universe" (or at least, so she thinks), and Canal, who is voiced by none other than by the famous Japanese voice actress Megumi Hayashibara! (Note: Watch the subtitled version with Japanese audio.. it's much better than the dubbed version!) Anyway, this show has funny moments that will have you laughing in no time, but it also has its serious and touching moments, too. The DVD itself has a nice menu screen with awesome opening/ending music. This is a must-buy for everyone!!! I can't wait to see more Lost Universe!!
