Summary: PBS Series About a Fascinating Country 2010-02-24
Comment: This is a DVD set of the recent PBS TV series regarding India, a growing and interesting country and culture. An exceptional value, especially when purchased with the companion book by the narrator. Check the Amazon and "associated merchants" prices for the best deal.

Summary: Very nice 2010-02-12
Comment: I gave my dad this for Christmas and he loved it.
It gives an overview of India's history, culture and present day position in a "condensed" 6 hrs.
What you will take away from this is a better appreciation for India and it's people.

Summary: Very good, if sketchy 2010-02-05
Comment: A very well done, pleasant documentary. Great for getting an overview and glimpse of Indian history, without feeling like you are going to school. Viewers should aware that it is NOT a detailed account of Indian history by any stretch of imagination; that would take 600 episodes not 6. Many many important events, figures, plots, and subplots are ignored. Maybe this is necessary to make it palatable for a broad audience, though I think that there are so many great stories in Indian history that it will never be boring even if you make it much longer. But it is a good Cliffs Notes version, and it will do a great service to India by spreading at least some understanding of Indian history in the West. Highly recommend.

Summary: Very Worthwhile Documentary 2010-02-04
Comment: Michael Wood is a very vibrant host who truly understands and loves India. The documentary gives excellent insight into both ancient and modern Indian culture. The footage of the villages and cities is just amazing to say the least. The documentary speaks about everything from the life of the Buddha, to the modern day Indian rebellion against the British.

Now for the cons. The information is sometimes put forth in a way that if one was not already slightly familiar with Indian history, they could began to lose track of what's going on for a bit. Also I was extremely disappointed that the almost 2000 year old Christian communities in India were not mentioned - except for a vague reference to a certain port in India that the Apostle Thomas is believed to have arrived at. Christians make up 2.3% of India's population, whereas Sikhs for example make up 1.9% of it. Anyway, other than those two issues, the DVD is excellent, and well worth watching, and perhaps re-watching a few more times for fun!

Summary: The Story of India DVD/PBS 2010-01-31
Comment: This two set DVD by Michael Wood is very thoroughly well done. The photography is colourful and the Indian music well chosen especially in the bonus features. This is a very informative video for those with an interest in the depth India has to offer and may give one ideas about where to travel to next with the best spots to focus on within the country known for making empires of the spiritual.
