Product Description
Panasonic DMR-E85HS is a progressive-scan DVD video recorder with built-in 120 GB hard disk and TV Guide On Screen. It records to DVD-RAM and DVD-R discs. Amazon.com Product Description
Panasonic's top-of-the line, fifth-generation DMR-E85HS DVD recorder packs a built-in 120 GB hard drive capable of storing up to 213 hours--more than 11 straight days--of audio/video programming in EP mode. So whether you're seeking the time-shifted TV viewing abilities of a VCR-like DVR or you want to archive your home movies to long-lasting DVD-RAM and DVD-R discs, this is the recorder for you. But it doesn't just slice and dice. The DMR-E85HS is also a progressive-scan DVD player for use with standard and high-definition or HD-ready TVs. It handles your DVDs, CDs, and homemade MP3 discs, as well as high-resolution DVD-Audio discs, which specialize in multichannel music mixes with quality surpassing that found on commercial CDs.
Just like with a DVR, you can schedule the recording of TV programming through the DMR-E85HS's user-friendly onscreen guide. | The DMR-E85HS offers the flexibility of recording on both DVD-RAM--perfect for instant chapter access and for multiple rerecordings--as well as DVD-R, generally regarded as the most widely compatible of the many DVD formats. DVD-RAM offers high storage capacity, high-speed data transmission, exceptional picture and sound quality, fast random-access memory, and rewritability up to 100,000 times. DVD-RAM recording time extends to 16 hours per disc in EP mode on 9.4 GB double-sided media. You can program the recorder for daily or one-time broadcasts much as you would a VCR. To simplify programming, the DMR-E85HS includes the TV Guide On Screen Electronic Programming Guide. With DVD-RAM, you can even perform simple nonlinear video editing, such as rearranging the order of scenes, skipping over unwanted scenes, and creating custom play lists of favorite scenes on a disc. | One touch of a button is all it takes to record data from the DMR-E85HS's hard disk drive to a DVD-RAM or DVD-R disc at high speeds. You can blaze along at a quick 12x normal speed when writing to DVD-RAM, or 24x normal speed when going from the hard disk to DVD-R (in EP mode, both cases). For example, you can burn a one-hour program to DVD-RAM in just 5 minutes, or to DVD-R in just 2.5 minutes. Panasonic's Time Slip feature lets you use your DVD recorder like a personal video recorder, or PVR. Because of DVD-RAM's extremely fast transfer rate, you can view the recorded portion of an ongoing program from the beginning, while still recording the program in progress. With Chasing Playback, you can view the recorded portion of a live program, from the beginning, while continuing to record that program until its completion. Simultaneous record & play lets you view a previously recorded program on either a DVD-RAM disc or the hard disk drive while simultaneously recording a different program. Relief Recording automatically checks the remaining disc space when recording to DVD-RAM or DVD-R. If there's not enough space, the video recorder shifts the balance of the recording to the hard drive. | The Chasing Playback feature lets you watch the program you're recording from the beginning while it's still in progress. | In addition to recording new video content, the DMR-E85HS lets you transfer your favorite VHS recordings to durable, space-saving discs. You can archive, preserve, and easily catalog and accessed your personal movie libraries and family videos. | | The recorder comes with a new Direct Navigator that simplifies the process of previewing recorded programs, letting you access recorded material from an onscreen menu that lists recording dates, times, channels, and titles. Finding and viewing recorded material is simple because there's no need to search, fast-forward, or rewind.
DVD-Audio offers super high-fidelity (192 kHz/24-bit) sound. DVD-Audio discs providemultichannel and stereo sound, incredible storage capacity, and unique bonus materials not available on regular audio CDs.
What's in the Box DVD player/recorder, a remote control, remote batteries, an RF audio/video in a stereo analog audio/composite-video interconnect, an AC power cord, a user's manual, and a registration card. |

Summary: Are you unhappy with E85H? 2009-05-12
Comment: Panasonic DMRE85HS Progressive-Scan DVD Player/Recorder with 120 GB Hard Drive Recording
If you are unhappy with your Panasonic DMR-E85H, email me. I might buy it from you. dennis2000@centurytel.net
I have had reasonable success with this item. I have had it for over a year and no problems so far. I really like it. But because of the reviews like those I see here, I'm in fear that it will fail me.
I would like to have a "backup" DMR-E85H so that when mine fails, it won't be as painful, just switch units. But due to finances, it is difficult to part with the money these are selling for.
As I see people posting that they have "tossed it out today", I want to contact them and say I will pay you something and take a chance I can fix it. Since there is no way to contact the persons purchasing on Amazon about their recorders, I decided to write my own review. Hopefully they won't throw this out.
To repeat, I like the one I own. Mine has worked well so far. I have become familiar with it and don't want to learn the idiosyncrasies of a new machine. That happens as you get older like me. (ha ha)
So, email me before you throw one out. Thanks! dennis2000@centurytel.net

Summary: Nice machine....when it worked 2009-05-10
Comment: We bought this dvd/dvr recorder E85H about 3 years ago. I would call it a lemon basically.
At one point we had to reformat the hard drive (losing all our recordings), as it was stuck. Sometimes you'd hit play or open on the dvd tray and it would not comply. It took long to boot up also. I liked it when it worked overall however - I stress when.
The final straws came when two capacitors failed and the machine was stuck on "Please Wait". I researched and found that others had this problem too. We bought a solder gun and replacement capacitors and managed to fix this problem thanks to internet info on a fix others posted on this issue. Then a month later, the machine fails to turn on at all - no power. We replaced another capacitor that was corroding and hoped that would fix it, but it did not. The more I read it seemed others also had this issue, that it was a power supply board gone bad. We gave up at that point on the machine and tossed it out today having paid over $300 for it just a few years ago.

Summary: DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM!!! 2008-08-09
Comment: I purchased this product in Dec 2004. Hard to operate. The TV guide feature did not work. Slow to startup. It locked up in March of this year. The display showed "PLEASE WAIT", and the machine did not respond to any buttons on the box or remote. Resetting the box did not work. Leaving it unplugged for days and plugging it back in again did not work.
I finally called Panasonic because I had about 50 hrs of programs recorded on the hard drive that I wanted to retain. This included Superbowls, bowl games, concerts, boxing, Survivor TV show finales, '06 Olympics, etc. which I had no way of replacing. They wanted $130 to repair the machine. I told them on the phone that under no circumstances were they to erase the material on the hard drive because the only reason I wanted it fixed was to be able to retrieve the stuff I had previously recorded.
I got the unit back on 8/6/08 after about 3 weeks at their repair center. The hard drive had been erased and all my programs were gone. I was infuriated by this and called the repair center the next day and demanded an answer as to how this happened. They blew it off as did the Panasonic customer service people. I then disputed the charge on my cc and have refused to pay them.
I WOULD NEVER BUY THIS ITEM NOR ANY OTHER PANASONIC PRODUCT. THEIR SUPPORT PEOPLE ARE USELESS AND SO IS THIS PRODUCT. I beat this DVR to pieces with a hammer yesterday and would do the same to the idiot who erased the hard drive if I knew who he was.

Summary: Excellent choice 2008-05-07
Comment: I bought my unit over 3 years ago when my vcr died. Did some research and liked what I read about this unit.
The DMR E85H is not as difficult to learn to use as some reviews state, and it's not as troublesome either. Mine has operated nearly flawlessly the entire 3 years I owned it. Earlier this year, I bought a second dvr,and went with the Phillips DVDR 3575H, since more Panasonic DMR E85s were not available at that time. The Phillips is a fine unit, but I definitely like the Panasonic MUCH better.
Last week, the Panasonic went completely dead.... a simple internet search took me to this page: http://vassfamily.net/projects/DMRE85H/dmre85h.html I followed the information on that page, and found the same 3 capacitors leaking on my unit. Easily replaced them myself, and got it back in operation, for less than $10!

Summary: biggest waste of money EVER 2008-04-02
Comment: This DVR was the biggest waste of money EVER. I wouldn't even give it one star, but I had to in order to save this review.
During the first year we owned it, it was in the repair shop for more than half the year. They repaired it once, we brought it home and it still froze up and wouldn't work. So we had to take it back and they ended up replacing the hard drive (which is what we told them was the problem the FIRST time we took it in). Of course both times it was in the repair shop they kept it for about 3-4 months. They should have given us a new unit since it was obviously defective (it stopped working after about a month the first time). We used it the 2nd year we owned it here and there, but we were afraid to count on it for anything since it still wouldn't tape things consistently (even though we had scheduled it to tape a few shows weekly). We got talked into buying a 2-year extended warranty for another $150 since we had so many problems the first year. That was another huge waste of money, because when did this machine die (yes, die -- it doesn't even turn on any more and we haven't even used it this year because of the TV strike)? It died on a Saturday, the day before the warranty expired but of course Panasonic wasn't open on the weekend so we couldn't report it until AFTER the warranty expired. I would NEVER buy another Panasonic DVR, particularly one with a hard drive, because they DON'T work.
