Finally, a way to turn downtime into prime time. Sony's stylish, slender DVP-FX701 offers a 7-inch widescreen TFT liquid-crystal display whose 16:9 aspect ratio matches that of your favorite feature films. Built-in stereo speakers offer virtual surround for a more spacious effect, and the unit plays CDs, too--leave the screen down, plug your headphones in, and crank it up (but not too loud). The DVP-FX701's 3-hour lithium-ion battery ensures uninterrupted viewing of all but the longest movies, and an included AC power adapter lets you watch from the hotel room--you can even plug it into a TV on the road or at home through the unit's minijack S-video and composite-video outputs. Use the player to listen to your MP3 CDs and to view slideshows of your most recent or most precious digital photos--perfect for those infrequent visits to mom and dad. A compact remote control affords ready access to the device from up to several feet away, and its brushed-aluminum finish lends an air of refined elegance. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio output (through a .125-inch minijack-to-Toslink optical cable, not supplied) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. The outputs are switchable as AV inputs, too, in case you want to use the screen as a monitor for a camcorder or video-game device. The resume feature automatically restarts playback from the point where you last stopped a disc. The model measures a mere 7.4 inches in length and 5.9 inches wide and a mere inch thick (without the battery). Headphones are not included. What's in the Box DVD player, remote control (RM-D163A), 2 AA batteries, one 7.4V lithium-ion battery, an RCA-to-minijack analog audio/composite-video interconnect, an AC adapter, and a user's manual.

Summary: Great Player 2007-11-23
Comment: I'm not sure what all the bad reviews are for this unit has lasted me for years and that's with an 11 year old playing it to death. I really do get tired of Sony haters filling up all the reviews with bad data.

Summary: I Love this machine! 2007-06-21
Comment: I got this for Christmas 3 years ago and have been using it almost every day since them for over 2 hours. The sound quality is not so great in the car, but thats what headphones are for! Mine stopped working the other day though, I wish sony had a better support program though. If anyone knows how to stop the 'No Disc' error, please contact me at [...]
This DVD player is great, even if I got a few errors, but those are easily remedied. The only 2 problems are that there is not volume control on the remote and fast forward/slow buttons on the actual DVD player.
I recommend this DVD player for those who can take care of it and take it on trips, planes, and for universal use in the home environment.

Summary: Not worth the price of admission 2006-09-14
Comment: I got this item as a gift and it worked for only one DVD. When I tried to charge it up again later, the charge wouldn't take. I sent it back to Sony and two weeks later, was told that a new battery would cost $225 (and no, they wouldn't waiver on it despite the fact it was a gift and I had no receipt). I'm not going to waste any more time with Sony and will look elsewhere for a replacement. I hope Amazon yanks this product from their site.

Summary: Just stopped working 2006-09-06
Comment: I have had the player for approximately one year and hardly ever used it. I have played about 10 DVD's on it and when I got it out to use it the other day I started watching a movie and the screen all of a sudden froze. I tried to push fast forward, pause, and play and the player did nothing. I turned it off and back on and now all I get is No Disc or Disc Error on the screen. I believe the player should have been capable of playing at least a thousand DVD's before a failure. I kept the player in a case in my closet so it wasn't setting out in direct sunlight or anything. I am very disappointed in this product and have written Sony about it. I will have to wait and see how well they back the products they sell.

Summary: Pile of Garbage 2006-05-14
Comment: I've had this unit 10 months. Firstly, you can't use it without a battery, even if its connected the mains. What a joke. So my first battery wouldn't recharge, and Sony charged me $258 for a new battery. Half what I paid for the whole DVD.
That battery lasts 5 hours, and the system turns off. It won't recharge either. So today, they tell me my power adapter needs exchanging, and thats $158. I tell them to shove it, I'm never buying another piece of junk from this company ever again. I read they are struggling to prevent from going bankrupt. With this terrible service, I'll be happy if they never sell anything to anyone ever again.
