Amazon.com Product Description
The Sony KF-50WE610 Grand WEGA LCD rear-projection television offers an ultra-slim, lightweight tabletop design that's perfect for any home or apartment. It features a wide range of audio and video inputs, native 1386 x 788 resolution, a DVI connection for an HDTV tuner, a 3D digital comb filter, and a Memory Stick slot.

It has a built-in 181-chanel NTSC tuner, and Sony's Digital Reality Creation MultiFunction feature upconverts the analog NTSC signals to near-HD quality, though you'll need a separate HDTV tuner to receive high-definition broadcasts. The KV-32HS510 set has a native 1386 x 788 pixel resolution and is compatible with the 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i formats.

The KF-50WE610's Sony WEGA engine delivers superb picture quality from any video source by minimizing the signal deterioration caused by digital-to-analog conversion and stabilizing the signal processing. The Digital Reality Creation Multifunction V1 line doubler replaces the NTSC wave form with the near-HD equivalent by digital mapping processing. Enhanced Direct Digital II circuitry increases signal-to-noise ratio when converting the signal from analog to digital. And the Multi-Image Driver maintains the integrity of a converted signal by minimizing image loss in the scaling process, providing the unique Twin-View picture-and-picture feature.

This set also features Sony's original Optical Engine, which provides a high-resolution picture from corner to corner across the entire screen. It uses a 100-watt UHP (Ultra High Pressure) lamp, which renders an image with high brightness and can be replaced easily.

You can view JPEG images captured from Sony digital cameras and camcorders using the built-in Memory Stick slot. Choose from an index of the images stored on the Memory Stick, or you can run a slideshow of those images.

The KF50WE610 has two built-in 15-watt speakers on the side that produce TruSurround SRS audio. Two component-video inputs (both at the rear) allow you to connect an optional HDTV receiver or another source with component video outputs. It also has a DVI input (rear), analog audio output (rear), 3 A/V inputs (2 front, 1 rear), 3 S-video inputs (2 front, 1 rear), and 1 each of S-Link output and input (for connecting other Sony components).

What's in the Box
Sony KF-50WE610 Grand WEGA LCD monitor, remote control (RM-913), 2 AAA batteries, cleaning cloth, and printed operating instructions.

Summary: Don't buy this TV!!!!! 2009-10-28
Comment: Sony has known issues with this TV, and they will not permanently, correctly fix it. Once the warranty runs out, you're screwed! The projection bulbs are $200 so be prepared to replace them. The light module (LCD screen) wil also go bad. Your replacement will also go bad.

This TV is not worth owning, and re-consider buying ANY SONY TV since they knowingly sold these TVs with serious design flaws.

Summary: Still going strong after 6.5 years 2009-08-15
Comment: I've had my Sony KF-50WE610 since January 2004. Original bulb, excellent picture and sound. No problems what so ever. Very happy with the value of this TV.

Summary: Lamp Housing 2009-07-21
Comment: First of all the it was a great TV one of the best ones that I ever owned. We got the tv in June 2004 we never had a problem until the last 8 months. We went thru 3 bulbs in the last 6 months and at over 200.00 a pop it became costly. We had a service tech come to our home and we found out that we had something called and optic block. Then the tech removed the lamp housing and we found a greater problem the entire lamp housing had started to melt and was a fire hazard. With the tv out of warranty it was going to cost over $1500.00 to fix. The service tech called Sony and after 3 days Sony called and offered us KDL52S5100 Flat panel tv for $475.00 with a list price of over $1800.00 it was a deal that could not be passed up from Sony. I hope we get as many years out of this new one.

Summary: It's starting to show its age - no HDMI or ATSC tuner 2009-02-25
Comment: We've had this TV for about 4 years now. I think I bought it in 2004. Anyway, at the time it was a good compromise, because flat screen LCD tv's were very expensive, and plasma was a crapshoot as to quality. And DLP was the big deal then. Not anymore. So, this TV's resolution is 1024 X 848. Yes, its a strange resolution, what it really means is that its a hair taller than most widescreen TV's. But its not 1080p. Also, it has NO ATSC tuner - if you want HDTV you have to buy a standalone tuner for it. I knew this when I bought it. Cable company HDTV box will also work. It has NO HDMI connections. Only 1 DVI connector, the rest are component Y/Pb/Pr connections and RCA jacks. But at the time DVI was all the rage and HDMI didnt exist.

Now, the number one expense in this set is the lightbulb. Our first one lasted about 2 1/2 years. We are still on our second bulb, which was not made by Sony and which is not as bright, but it gets the job done. I noticed that light bulbs ( they are called PL-2100U I think) are now down to about $120 - $140. Cheaper than when I bought the first replacement bulb.

Also, standard def TV doesn't look really sharp on these sets. The flat panel LCD sets now everywhere do a better job of this I think. But, I bought this set expecting it to last 10 years, and I have 5 and a half to go, and it seems to be fine. My next set will have a built in tuner and hang on the wall. I think the next revolution in content is going to come from the internet, and you will be able to stream everything from your laptop to your TV. You can do this now easily if you have HDMI. Cable networks should beware, their days of charging a lot for content are numbered, soon we'll only need them for internet and VOIP phone.

Summary: Sony has lost a loyal customer of 15 years 2009-02-15
Comment: This piece of f&*cking sh#t has a blue hue on the corner and middle of the screen. This is a KNOWN ISSUE with these rear projection LCDs...not just this model, but all of Sony's rear projection LCDs. Just Google "Sony Grand Wega Blue Hue" and there'll be tons of links to others who've had this problem. The TV was purchased in 2005 for $2500.

It is a very costly repair, as this is related to the "heart of the TV."
