"According to Akan traditions, the Osompa mask is usually given to a woman as recognition for her diligent work," explains master carver Daniel Nyadedzor. "Osompa means "good service" in Akan dialect, and it is given with some money too, when the woman leaves to get married." Nyadedzor carves the striking sese wood mask by hand and adorns its face with delicately embossed brass plates. Artisan Info: Daniel Nyadedzor has been featured in the San Antonio Express News. "I was born in May, 1972 in the eastern region of Ghana. In 1996, after finishing school and a year's national service, I decided to help my brother who was a carver and had his own shop. I did all his paperwork. "Initially, the work done did not measure up to internationally accepted standards. Quality control was poor. However, after working with him for a few months I realized the need to incorporate certain measures. After tasking ourselves to reach the international standards, the business grew tremendously. We have been working together all these years. "We acquire a type of hardwood known as sese for carving the masks.
