Product Description
NOVICA, in association with National Geographic, offers thousands of limited edition and one-of-a-kind gifts, jewelry, and home decor treasures handmade by master artists and artisans throughout the world. Subin Tositarat hand-crafts this delightful rounded box. The removable lid and the body are decorated with engravings and paintings depicting a floral pattern. After the piece is carved, it is receives a gilded lacquer coating, in itself a long, laborious process. Then, in an engraving technique called lai kad, (dug-out pattern), the decorative motifs are etched freehand with a sharp tool. A combination of lacquer, peanut oil, coloring agent, and water is rubbed onto the surface. It is left to dry and polished with rice husks, the color remaining only in the engravings. The process is identical for each different color. Lastly, Tositarat embellishes his creation with a touch of acrylic paint. Artisan Info: "My name is Subin Tositarat. I was born August 21, 1950 in northern Thailand, where I grew up with five brothers and sisters. I graduated from high school and then studied electricity at a technology institute. But I did not graduate, for I got seriously bored, and I also could not picture myself as an electrician. It did not fit with what I really liked.
