Summary: Lots of nice features 2010-03-18
Comment: First of all, the numbers are very big; about twice the size of another thermometer I had. There are a lot of nice features with his thermometer. The automatic off feature will certainly save a lot of batteries and regrets. The sleeve has an open tip on it to allow it to measure ambient temperature.a calibration button allows you to ensure it is set correctly. A hold button will let you retained the reading until you can get the thermometer to where you can read it. The package says it's waterproof, I don't plan on testing though! It is rated for commercial use so it is very durable. Changing the battery is through a large screw on cap so that should be easy to do.

Summary: probably not for convection roasting 2010-03-03
Comment: The whole apparatus melted within 10 minutes. It perhaps was the way I used it, as I put it into 450 degree convection oven on 'roast'. But my understanding was that it was rated for up to 450 degrees, no exceptions. Went to the Publix and got an old timey clock hands type thermometer, which works fine for our needs.

Summary: Works great, good value 2010-02-26
Comment: This is my first thermometer. Works great! My steaks and lamb chops taste so much better. Now I can cook my steaks with peace of mind knowing that they are sufficiently well cooked. While thermometer seems water resistant, I take care not to get the LCD part of it wet. Take care of it and it will last a long time. Do not leave it in the oven!

Summary: Fantastic product, but don't trust the chart on the probe cover 2010-02-17
Comment: Reads in about 5 seconds
very shallow read (good for reading small things) maybe 1/2"
nice 5" probe
auto-off after 10 minutes (I can't tell you how many times I've pulled my old Taylor out of the drawer and found it turned on)
easy to change batteries
can be recalibrated
waterproof
can hold temp or review max
seems extremely accurate (I've tested the boiling point on some known things and it seems withing .5 degrees or so.)

All in all I'd say it's a perfect thermometer. You could get a Taylor 9840 at Walmart for half this price, but you would be sitting for 20-30 seconds waiting on it to read (and it's not waterproof, doesn't turn off, and you have to take it apart to change the battery). A Thermapen would be better (I trust, I haven't ever actually used one), but you're going to pay $90 for it.

My only complaint is that it has a chart on the probe cover of cooking temperatures of various things, which would be fantastic except that it's taken from USDA guidelines, which disagree with reality. I've never met anyone who considers a 160 degree F steak to be "medium"...

Summary: a must have 2010-02-15
Comment: A very needed tool in every kitchen. Great for making sure the chicken is done.
