It has a one bushel hopper capacity and it can be adjusted from coarse (8 to 1) to fine (30 to 1) particle size reduction. The wide 21-inch diameter funnel swallows leaves as fast as you can feed them, mincing them down to fine mulch. This little unit is surprisingly powerful, and at only 17 pounds it's so light you can mount it atop a trash can or bungee-cord a plastic bag to the outfeed and collect the waste. Out of the box, it goes together literally in minutes with just a screwdriver. The hopper tilts to 45 degrees to make loading easier, and the sliding control lever is easy to read, with settings for grass, thatch, wet leaves, dry leaves and pine needles. Double cutting lines are powered by an 8-amp motor on regular household current, and the motor intake filter comes out easily for cleaning. A built-in storage compartment keeps extra line at the ready, and changing cutter lines is easy. This mulcher is indespensible for the gardener who takes composting and mulching seriously. Breaking down leaves accelerates the composting process the the mulched leaves is perfect for flower beds. I have put mine through two seasons of hard work and recently purchased another one to give away as a raffle prize at an annual community gardeners event.

Comment: The use of commercial mulches it seems to me has become maniacally compulsive. I find the "leaf eater" a wonderful alternative whose results have benefitted my gardens greatly.

Comment: The Flowtron shreds well as long as you take care to not over fill and stop frequently to shift material away from the sides. It is not a chipper so you can't get away with woody stems or sticks but on soft material it works just fine.

Comment: I owned a years-earlier model leaf shredder. This model is head and shoulders above. The motor seems more powerful and the plastic whips are a thicker gauge.
So it handles leaves, pine needles, and the thin twigs that are impossible to separate out, and makes a fine mix, perfect for making quick compost. We also use the mix as a ground cover or plant mulch.
The settings allow you to handle wet leaves, which is often the case for me in the Fall.
The set-up was easy. The funnel and barrel swing down for storage, taking up about a two foot cube of space.
I purchased with neighbors, a good way to share the resource, and the cost.

Summary: Used twice and no longer works 2008-06-30
Comment: I used this twice according to instructions and it no longer works. I specifically bought it because it had a pine needle setting, but I would not recommend it for this. I am also disappointed with the service help I have received. It is unclear to me who is reponsible to take care of the non-working product - Amazon or Flowtron.
