The Scott's classic reel mower is light, maneuverable, and economical. The business end of this push reel mower is solid, sharp, and everything a reel mower should be, with five heat-treated, knife-sharp steel blades that can be adjusted for nine grass heights with very easy wheel tabs. With its 10-inch wheels, radial tires, and 20-inch cutting width, this mower should enable you to cross whatever terrain and reach whatever hard-to-access rogue patches of grass you desire. There's no soft cushion on the handle, which is too bad, but otherwise, the Scotts Classic is a durable, well-constructed, simple device.

Summary: The better mowing experience 2008-05-17
Comment: When I was a kid, my dad had a reel mower, but I never got to use it (I was too small), and by the time I was big enough, he'd bought a new gas-powered mower. I hated the thing: the fumes stank & made me nauseous, starting it made my shoulder ache for days, and by the end of mowing I felt like I'd been strapped to a paint-mixer.
So when MY gas mower broke (again), I decided to see if there were reel mowers to be had, found the Scott 2000-20, bought it.
I'll give you my big complaint up front: the handle assembly feels fragile & insubstantial; it is neither solid nor rigid; however, in use, this seems not to be a problem - and USE is where this thing shines.
The entire mower weighs perhaps a quarter of the weight of my gas mower: it's easy to store, easy to handle, and far easier to push than the Toro - so right away, mowing is a transformed experience for me. I enjoy mowing now: I like the sound the mower makes, I like the fact that the mower isn't all I can hear; I like the nice, neat job it does on the grass - and so, apparently, does the grass, as my lawn has truly never looked so good.
There are a couple of things you should know before deciding to pick up a reel mower: first, the way the reel is designed makes it tricky for it to cut grass that's too tall: best time to mow is before the grass grows higher than the vertical center of the reel; to deal with those 'sports' that always seem to shoot up much faster than the rest of the lawn, a swing blade makes a light, easy-to-handle, inexpensive accessory that will help keep your shoulders limber, too!
Also, the reel is not designed to eat pine-cones, rocks and sticks, so if you are the sort who can't or won't make the effort to keep such off the lawn, you're probably not the lawn-mowing type: - get the kid next door to mow your lawn so you can yell at him about his work instead of doing your own.
I'm extremely pleased, bottom-line: I got a great deal from Amazon, I got a great mower, I'm having a great time in the yard. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is, the handle needs to prove itself to me over time.

Summary: Good clean mower with couple of needed improvements 2008-05-17
Comment: If you are looking to get away from the fumes and loud noise of a usual lawn mower, this should be a welcome change. It definitely shines in those areas.
Negatives that can be improved in future designs...
It cannot handle the weeds that well requiring repeated mowing in those areas.
Handle design needs improvement to make it provide much better grip and control on the maneuvering.

Summary: Great mower except for the horrible handle 2008-05-17
Comment: This mower mows great. It's actually easier to use than a gas mower. If only the handle was as great. Assembling the handle, it seemed very flimsy with no way to tighten the bolts further, and what bolts there were seemed insufficient. I hoped for the best, but the handle completely fell apart the first time I used it. It is now duct taped together just so I can get through one mow. Very disappointing.

Summary: Great Mower - Serious Handle Design Flaws 2008-05-12
Comment: Summary: Great product with a wide deck and easy to push. Handle design is awful and actually broke after several weeks of use!
Pro's:
- 20 inch deck is great and still extremely lightweight. Good because some overalap is required with push mower
- "Blades" are safe and very effective. I have a 4 year old and 9 year old and no worries about them
- Very quiet and smooth performance
- Small amount of "give" in handle helps with cornering
Flaws:
- Small diverter behind blades can collect grass and slow you down, especially when wet
- Handle design is CHEAP!!!!! Connects at the middle with two flimsy rods and some screws. This makes the performance rickety and actually broke on me after a few weeks of mowing. I had to duct tape them together to finish the job and now am figuring out how to get it fixed. My neighbor has the same issue and he is thinking about putting hose clamps on them to make them sturdier. It seems ridiculous that you would have to buy additional hardware to reinforce a poor design!
A couple of notes about reel mowing that don't have to do with this product.
- Be realistic in your expectations. If you start mowing in the Spring when the grass is thickest and you are out of shape, you may be setting yourself up to quit before you give it a chance.
- Doesn't pick up leaves! Mows right over them in most cases. So you may want to keep the gas mower for the fall and spring or invest in a lawn sweeper.
- Some annual bluegrass and other weeds can literally bring you to a halt! I've found myself almost chopping through this stuff. Again, you may want to keep your power mower around just to get through the spring.
My summary on this is you should see it almost like a bicycle at first. It is a perfect supplement to powered transport and can really get you in shape, have fun, and reduce pollution. But there are times when you really, really, need the car and so shouldn't get rid of it right away.

Comment: The cutting portion of the mower seems well built and solid. The handle and arms of the product are terribly weak. Why would any engineer design such a poor quality handle? The product is only as good as its weakest link and the handle scores a minus 2 and the mower scores a plus 4 giving a net score of plus 2.
This could be a great product with just a little more thought put into the design of the handle supports.
