Amazon.com Product Description

The Yard Machines 22-inch 5.5 hp gas-powered dual-stage snow thrower has a 5.5 HP 4-cycle Tecumseh engine with plenty of power to clear away snow up to 16 inches high. A recoil start and self-propelled drive system keep this thrower going, and manual pitch control lets you adjust it to the varying terrain. The thrower clears a 22-inch wide path by using a 9-inch impeller to propel snow out a 5-inch polymer chute. 10 by 4-inch tires keep the thrower rolling, and a large mitten grip handle with single hand operation keeps you comfortable in cold weather. The tank has a 2-quart fuel capacity, and Yard Machines backs its thrower with a 2-year limited warranty.

Comment: Yard Machines 22-Inch 5.5 HP Gas-Powered Dual-Stage Snow Thrower #31A-3CAD700

CHANGE THE BELTS, MINE WERE SLIPPING; I REPLACED THEM WITH A BELT THAT WOULD SIT ON THE CREST OF THE PULLEY. THIS MACHINE IS GREAT IN POWDER SNOW BUT PLUGS UP WITH AN ICY MIX. THE ENGINE STARTS EASY AND RUNS GREAT.
OTHERWISE, I AM SATISFIED WITH MY PURCHASE.

Comment: The snow blower arrived on time, it was the exact thing I order, it is east to start and easy to use. It's not good in wet snow it will freeze up and you will have to clear the passage way. It is heavy but it really gets the job done. Easy to start and easy to guide,I love it, best one yet and I have had many snowblowers.

Summary: Problem with Auger Belt Slippage 2008-01-16
Comment: I haven't had a chance to use this unit yet as i spent a week trying to fix it myself after discovering that the auger wasn't spinning out of the box. After giving up and taking it in for service, the mechanic got the auger belt to stay on by means of taking a crowbar to push the engine assembly forward. Apparently the way this thing is designed results in a lot of torque that will eventually, through shipping or time, push the auger belt off. The repair was covered under warranty but it was pretty frustrating to deal with all of this for $500 bucks. Can't wait to try it out tommorow through. Bring on the white-out!

Summary: Features and value good but not durable at all -- BEWARE 2008-01-13
Comment: The cheap plastic brackets that secure both the drive cable and auger cable broke off after only 2 or 3 moderate uses of this snowblower. And the user's manual and MTD website did not clearly indicate whether replacements were available. Are they part of the cables themselves? Bottom line is I spent about $500 and got only a few uses before the unit became totally inoperable.

Comment:
We moved this summer and left our old snow blower with the old house. Of course we put off buying a new one until it was too late. We got hit with substantial December snowfall this year. While there are tons of retailers selling snow blowers in our area (just outside of Minneapolis), we are far enough away from them that they will not deliver to our door. So we were looking at having to rent a truck and then go searching through the picked over snow blowers available in our area (90% of those that were available were electric). I decided to check online to see what shipping costs would be in comparison to renting a truck. I was floored that Amazon had a great price on this model along with free shipping (normally $170). We ordered it that night.

The next day we got hit with another 6 inches of snow. Now I was concerned that I had made an error because I had no idea how long it would take for Amazon to ship the snow blower to our address. We had more than a foot of snow to get rid of and no idea when the snow blower would arrive. The snow blower arrived 2 days after I ordered it! I was able to unbox the beast, fire it up, and clear up our driveway and paths in about 3 hours.

I read the other reviews and the concern about the tires is a legitimate one. I got lucky as mine arrived with full tires and they are still full. Looking at the tires, I can see how difficult it would be to repair them if they would not hold air.

Assembly is very easy. You don't need to mix gas with oil for this model. You may need to add some oil (as per instructions) as it may ship with a less than optimal level of oil. Otherwise, assembly and operation are very simple. The device weighs about 120 pounds, so you may want to take that into account if you will need another person to help move/unbox it.

The engine has started every time (I've used it about 6 times so far) and is powerful enough to throw snow about thirty feet. I love the self-propulsion system.

All in all, I am very happy with my purchase. We ended up getting a great machine for a great price in a very short amount of time.
