Summary: Hi-Energy Vanilla Spice 2007-01-31
Comment: "Ideals are like stars: you will not succeed in touching them with your hands. But like the seafaring man on the desert of waters, you choose them as your guides, and following them you will reach your destiny." ~Carl Schurz

Black teas from Assam, Indonesia and Africa, vanilla, cinnamon, licorice, cardamom, anise, American Panax ginseng, guarana and cola nut are the main ingredients in this energy enhancing drink. This has more caffeine than cola, less than coffee and much less than a double espresso. Well, that is if you only use 1 teabag. Two teabags will give you 120 milligrams of caffeine. While this might not be the tea you want to reach for right before bed, it does wake you up in the morning.

Celestial Seasonings also makes a Teahouse Chai mix (decaf) in Vanilla Ginger Spice and a few teaspoons (or up to 1-2 tablespoons) can be added to the tea to make this a creamy dreamy drink to sip while you eat some banana muffins. By adding the spice mix, you also add honey, cinnamon, clove, cardamom, clove, anise, ginger and Tahitian vanilla. These two teas go very well together and warm you nicely in winter. The brew actually looks a little like hot chocolate when you mix them together, so whipped cream and nutmeg might be an option.

So, if the Vanilla Spice seems a bit mild, try mixing in the Teahouse Chai mix and I think you will be very satisfied with the combination of spices. Not creamy enough? Add in some powdered milk or a dash of cream.

Summary: HIgh energy, but not enough vanilla--or spice! 2006-09-06
Comment: This tea has some interesting ingredients: black tea, ginseng, cola nut and guarana. All of which are known for their health and energy enhancing benefits. The enchanting vanilla aroma of this tea was almost enough for me to think it was a four star. Alas, there was very little vanilla flavor in the brew--or spice for that matter. The flavor led with a faint vanilla taste which was quickly eradicated by a bitter taste--perhaps guarana (?) and then a somewhat plain tea flavor with a bark-like ginseng aftertaste. I could not detect any spice flavor at all.

Celestial Seasonings gets extra points for their packaging: they utilize 100% natural recycled paperboard in their boxes and they don't package each tea bag individually. Instead they use a system of a waxed paper bag inside the box that stays shut when you fold it. It keeps the bags fresh and utilizes less packaging than individually wrapping each bag. They put a caffeine meter on the box to compare this tea with cola and coffee beverages-this tea has 60 mg of caffeine compared to 90 in a cup of drip coffee. This tea has the antioxidants of black tea along with a fairly high caffeine level. The amount of antioxidants and information about them would be a good addition. The art they use on each box is beautiful as are the quotes and information they put on every surface. For example that drinking two cups of black tea a day provides as many flavonoids as one serving of fruits and vegetables.

Quote from the box:"I like trains because they make sounds that fit their bodies." Brian Andreas.
