Summary: Caution - Not Equivalent to Extended-Release Niacin 2007-08-07
Comment: If you have elevated cholesterol and your physician has recommended extended-release niacin, you need to be aware that inositol hexanicotinate is not equivalent to the extended-release niacin normally prescribed for this indication. Human clinical trials that have investigated the cholesterol-lowering effects of this substance have not been impressive. For a brief review, see the following article: "Flush-Free Niacin": Dietary Supplement May Be "Benefit-Free", by Robert B. Norris MD, in Preventive Cardiology, Winter 2006, pages 64-65. I suggest checking with your physician before making any substitution.
