The limited availability and and rich taste of Yauco Estate coffee makes it a favorite among coffee connoisseurs around the world. For over 250 years, the Puerto Ricans have been making coffee. The most well known and prized comes from the southwest mountains on the island. In the 19th Century, there was a migration of residents from Corsica to Puerto Rico. They started farming in these highlands around the town of Yauco. By the 1860's, they dominated the coffee industry on the island. By the 1890's, they were the 6th largest producers in the world. Cafes in Vienna, Madrid, London and Paris featured Yauco coffee by name - 100 years before the development of the specialty coffee industry. After Puerto Rico ceded to the U.S. and 2 severe hurricanes, the coffee industry had severely dwindled. Heavy tariffs in Europe also slowed down the export because Puerto Rican coffee no longer entered as a colonial product. The export of sugar became supreme. Between 1965 and 1990, 100% of their coffee was consumed by Puerto Rico. Thankfully, this has changed. Yauco Estate coffee is a true Estate coffee with old style arabica varieties being grown by 2 farms - Hacienda San Pedro and Hacienda Santa Ana. This is important because one group is involved in all steps of processing, resulting in a reliably superior and consistent cup. With a full bodied, creamy, buttery taste, Yauco Estate coffee has an arresting aftertaste with hints of chocolate undertones.
