Product Description

Abreva is the only non-prescription cold sore medicine FDA approved to shorten healing time and duration of symptoms. That's why it's the number one Pharmacist recommended cold sore medication. While other products just soothe, Abreva goes deep in the skin to help heal cold sores from the inside out...Fast! Abreva is available in two formats; a convenient tube to keep Abreva ever-ready at home, and now a new easy-to-use pump for a clean and easy application on the go. When Should I Use Abreva? Start applying Abreva the moment you feel a cold sore coming on, when you feel that tingle, itch and/or burning sensation. If you miss the tingle stage, start using Abreva as soon as you can, and apply it five times a day until your cold sore is healed. How Does Abreva Work? Abreva contains 10 percent Docosanol, a unique patented active ingredient that helps protect healthy cells from the cold sore virus. As Abreva helps the healthy cells defend the cold sore virus, the virus has a difficult time infecting more and more cells. This means cold sores heal faster and symptoms don't last as long. Why Use Abreva? Other cold sore treatments only relieve symptoms, so they can't match the healing power of Abreva. Just check out the interactive demo to see the Abreva difference. Plus, Abreva offers a Money-Back Guaranteee. If you aren't completely satisfied for any reason, save your receipt and remaining product, and call 1-877-709-3539 to receive a full refund.

Summary: Not sure it helps 2009-06-05
Comment: I'm not sure Abreva did much for my fever blister. I recently read reviews here for a product that contained benzalkonium chloride 0.13% and benzocaine. I couldn't find it in the stores but found TANAC in my medicine cabinet. It has similar ingredients (0.12%). The benzocaine numbs it. It is a great product but hard to find now. Amazon carries it at the best price.

Summary: Abreva 2009-06-04
Comment: This product is good for cold sores. I ended up only needing a small amount to heal my coldsore. The only problem is the tube is extremely small so hard to keep track of.

Summary: Use it RIGHT AWAY, until there's a cure (they're working on it) 2009-05-19
Comment: Again and again the same advice is doled out and sometimes willfully ignored. Yes, Abreva is a great product but the only way it's most effective is if you use it AS SOON as you feel a sore coming on. If this is done when it's still in its "waxing" phase you can really prevent a sore from fully blooming and crusting over. I've done this at least once a year for the past several years, and usually get whatever's there to vanish within 3 days as a result. My $18 tube is now more than 2 years old and has fought back at least 3 or 4 sores. Good stuff, worth every penny.

Summary: Found something MUCH better, MUCH CHEAPER! 2009-04-19
Comment: Hi fellow cold sore sufferers. Don't you just love how the drug companies have us under their thumbs because we are desperate to get rid of these damn cold sores?!! So we will fork out a ton of money in hopes that the newest expensive product just might work. ABREVA IS NOT IT. BUT there is good news...There's another product that my friend used that she had great success with called Viroxyn (also avail on Amazon, VERY EXPENSIVE, but read on!) SO after some research online and at my local Walgreens, I came across a product called "CureChrome" First aid Antseptic. It has the EXACT SAME ACTIVE INGREDIENT as Viroxyn IN THE EXACT SAME PERCENTAGE (Benzalkonium Chloride 0.13% -The Benzocaine in Virozyn is just a numbing agent)but CureChrome costs about 10% the price! Even the Walgreens generic version of Viroxyn was $30.00 about $378 an ounce! I got a 1oz btl. of CureChrome for $3.50 NO JOKE! I put it on on day two of my cold sore. By that evening it was in the scabbing over stage. I applied it 2-3x the next day (rub in for 10+ secs till dry) and by day 3 I could tell it was in the "virus gone-just need to heal the skin" stage and so I started applying Neosporin to speed up the healing process. I'm now on day 4 and there is no swelling, no pain just a bit red and flaky. By far the shortest cold sore I have ever had. I have used Abreva in the past and am pretty convinced it doesn't do much. I grabbed it (Abreva)as soon as I felt the tingling and still got a bad sore...So there it is. This is my 1st review and I hope it saves somebody some pain and money. You can see the product on Walgreens website and compare for yourself. Good luck!

Summary: The first time I've gone to battle with a cold sore and won... 2008-12-28
Comment: I have been getting cold sores about once a year for as long as I can remember. I have tried many different over-the-counter products, with no proof that they did anything to help the cold sores. I have also tried prescription medications, including Zovirax (Acyclovir) and Valtrex. Though I like to convince myself that the prescription meds helped, they didn't do much. Part of the problem is that you'd like to treat as soon as you know a cold sore is coming, but you may have to call a doctor to get a prescription, and it takes a while for the medicine to build up in your bloodstream, and by the time it starts taking effect you've got an angry cold sore on your hands.

Christmas Day 2008, I wake up with a Christmas present to myself, the visible start of a cold sore on my upper lip. Yuck. Usually my odds are better if I catch a cold sore in the "tingling" phase, and if I don't notice it until it's visible I'm in deep trouble. Since my prescription had expired and I had no chance of getting it renewed in time, I headed to the drugstore. Abreva seemed to set itself apart from other products. Small tube in a big package with a big price. Oh well, it's worth a shot...

Anyway, after three days of applying this product whenever possible, the cold sore is on its way out! I can't believe it! The sore never erupted or became ulcerated. The whole process usually takes 10 days to two weeks, and includes an ugly scab at the end. This time, the sore just tested the waters and got a little hot, then the Abreva scared it away. Hurray Abreva! Anyway, I can't guarantee it will work as well for everyone else, but I finally feel that I have found a product that will keep my cold sores under control.
