Amazon.com Review
The best coffee is always the freshest coffee. That's why it makes no sense to brew by the pot: by the time you get around to drinking most of the joe, it's been sitting in a carafe (or worse, on top of a burner), going more bitter and stale with each minute. The Breville single-cup brewer takes a different tack. It makes coffee one cup at a time, so each cup tastes as fresh as the first one in the pot. Each cup is also 100% customized--by brew temperature, by grind, by varietal, even by cup size--so it's perfect for households or dinner parties in which everyone likes a different brew. Best of all, the brewing process is very, very difficult to mess up. The Breville's patented "showerhead" sprays a precisely calibrated amount of water through a "K-Cup," a technology made famous by Keurig's single-cup brewers, using temperature and pressure designed to extract the maximum amount of flavor from the grounds. More than 150 pre-packed K-Cups are available for beverages ranging from hot chocolate to organic dark-roast Columbian, produced by roasters from Tully's to Green Mountain Coffee. These no-mess, single-use containers are certainly convenient, and they look nifty when entertaining, but they can also get expensive for everyday use. Thus the Breville also comes with the "My K-Cup," a filter that can be packed with any grind (and amount) of coffee, washed by hand or in the dishwasher, and reused as many times as desired. Like all of this company's handsomely designed kitchen equipment, the Breville single-cup coffee brewer is aesthetically gorgeous and feels solidly constructed. It's made from heavy-duty stainless steel with a die-cast safety locking arm, and comes with an internal water filter system to remove impurities that can impart off flavors and smells. A backlit reservoir holds 60 ounces of water and can brew up to 10 cups before it needs refilling; the programmable LCD screen has a refreshingly easy-to-use interface. Also included are a measuring scoop that fits handily (along with the "My K-Cup") into a top compartment as well as a variety pack of 18 different pre-packed K-Cups. The Breville single-cup coffee brewer measures 14-3/4 by 12-3/4 by 16-3/4 inches --Mary Park

Summary: The HG of Coffee Makers! 2008-11-29
Comment: I believe that the single cup makers definitely make a far better cup of coffee, and this one is, by far, the best. Not only is it attractive, but it is efficient and serves up a rich, crisp cup of coffee every time. I am replacing a Tassimo that leaks and is very noisy. This Breville also makes noise, but trust me, it's not any noisier than other makers of this caliber. Although the Tassimo offered a broader spectrum of beverages (Lattes, Cappucinos, etc. - it froths milk discs), I don't miss it. My kids can now make hot cocoa without my help and my husband no longer needs written instructions when I go out of town. You just pop in the K-cup and hit the brew button; no waiting for the lights to turn green, etc.
I find the My K-cup to be very messy and time consuming. One of the reasons I bought the Breville was for the convenience, so why would I want to go through this process? However, I realize there are those who prefer their own coffee and this is a great option for them. I also like how they incorporated a storage area for this option.
As far as K-cup selection, I believe they have come a long way. When I first started looking at the Keurig a year ago, they were limitted. However, if you go to the Keurig web site, you can see they offer quite a selection and many of those selections offer a 5 cup sample option. My personal favorites are the Gloria Jean's selections. They are all very smooth and flavorful. If you are lucky enough to have a Gloria Jean's in your area, they have a whole wall full of K-cups and you can mix and match them! I look for Keurig to add more and more brands in the future (Cafe Du Monde Chickory would be nice).
One last thing - the LCD display and options. I love how you can program the machine to turn off and on at specified times, the temperature of the coffee, and the size of your cup.
I look forward to my daily cup so much I have added a second as a daily routine! My house is cleaner and all my laundry is done (for a while anyway)!

Summary: Love It! 2008-10-30
Comment: After searching around for a single-cup brewer, I finally settled on this product. This was after seeing the positive reviews here on Amazon. At first, I was not too keen on the fact of using K-Cups, but now after a few weeks of use, I realize that they are very convenient and generally the coffee or tea tastes pretty darn good. Also, with the My K-Cup, I can use whatever ground beans I so desire which eliminates the need to be soley dependent on other K-Cups. All in all, I am very happy with my purchase and highly recommend it.

Summary: Overall...AWESOME. A few design flaws, though.... 2008-10-30
Comment: Yeah! I now have a hot beverage station on my kitchen counter for guests to pick whatever they want, be it coffee, hot chocolate, tea. I've just set my machine up and I've already had two cups! Yum.
Here are a few quick tips:
1. I put a small amount of dairy (or soy milk) in a mug and microwave for 30 seconds to heat it up, then put mug on the Breville machine and press brew - beverage stays much hotter for longer period of time.
2. Have a kitchen towel on hand to wipe occasional spatters unless you're using a really tall mug, and clean under the spout too.
3. It does vibrate loudly, so I put a soft rubber coaster in the drip tray (with still enough room for drainage just in case) and the vibration from your mug and the metal tray is substantially reduced.
One design drawback...you can't keep the neat blue light on without keeping the machine constantly on, which heats the water and is a waste of energy. Oh well. In all other respects, this machine is amazing. But what really sold me is the refillable K-cup so I can use my own ground coffee; I have gripes about consumables like with inkjet printers...so that's a nice feature to have. Yeah, it's pricey, but I spend on average $5 at a local coffee shop daily because I also buy something to eat...but bringing the coffee shop home and eating my own food is helping to recover the cost here and save money in the long haul. Plus, Chicago winters are brutal so I don't even need to leave the house for a good cup of coffee! A big plus.
I hope this review is helpful to you.

Summary: noisy k-cup machine 2008-10-24
Comment: I love k-cups and have had 2 other machines since 2004. This one looks good but very noisy. The commercial grade keurig holds more water and a lot more quiet.

Comment: Breville BKC600XL Gourmet Single-Cup Coffee Brewer
Looks great. Went through the priming and setup verbatim. It shook like a banshee for about 10 minutes, then went to heat mode, but never heated the water. Hopefully the return process will be smooth.
