Summary: Documentation is hard to follow 2008-03-03
Comment: I bought this as a novice to sewing. The documentation that comes with the machine is rather hard to understand. The controls can be confusing. I have figured it out now and I have to say the machine works great once you figure out how to use the controls. I didn't get much help from the book and just did some testing and troubleshooting on my own.

Summary: A good machine for a beginner 2008-02-23
Comment: I am an absolute beginner...meaning, I know what a sewing machine looks like, but I never actually touched one. I read all the reviews on all the different Brother sewing machines available. I even called Brother directly to ask them which sewing machine they would recommend for a beginner. This was their pick. I have to admit, at first I was ready to throw the thing threw the window. The instructions are not for a beginner...I agree with some of the other reviewers...alot of the instructions are very incomplete. I actually took my machine to a sewing machine shop and took an hour lesson on how to use it! They helped alot. I am no longer afraid of it. I think it will be a very useful machine once I master it. I have already taken 1 class and plan to take more. A very good buy for the money. Even the seamstress who gave me the lesson said she would absolutely recommend this machine!

Summary: Good machine for basic use 2008-02-15
Comment: We were looking for a lightweight but fairly-capable machine to replace an old, heavy "portable". This Brother has a wide range of stitches, a needle threader, free-arm capability for sewing circular items and will sew several layers of fabric. This puts it a notch above some of the real cheap entry level machines. Some of the pieces, like the plastic panel over the bobbin, seem flimsy, but it should be OK if handled with proper care. The included case is really just a vinyl cover with a couple of pockets. You reach through the cover to grab the machine and carry it by its handle. All in all, I think it will work fine for our occasional mending, or a beginning machine etc. If you are seriously into sewing, you may want to go to check out some heavier-duty models.

Summary: An incredible value for a work horse machine! 2007-12-16
Comment: I bought this machine a year ago for use in my budding home business. It has been a work horse machine for a year now, never giving me a bit of trouble. I appreciate all of the features and accessories that came with it! I haven't used all of the various feet, but the walking foot has been indispensable for sewing with a variety of materials from knits to leathers! I believe Brother machines are great value and quality machines. I also own a Brother serger.

Summary: Sews a nice stitch 2007-11-06
Comment: This machine is a great bargain at $129. It sews a nice balanced straight stitch, a nice hemming stitch and other decorative stitches. It has a needle threader that works and is easy to use. I sew a lot and sell many of the things I sew. I have a Brother serger also.
