Product Review
Product Description

By removing air from a jar you can keep the food within fresh three to five times as long. Save your self time and money using the Tilia FoodSaver system.
Amazon.com Review

For those who cook large quantities of food, FoodSaver vacuum packaging systems offer excellent protection against food spoilage and freezer burn. This jar sealer attachment fits on wide-mouth mason jars and is for use with any FoodSaver machine that has an accessory port. The top forms a tight seal on mason jars while the tubing removes air from the jar with the help of a FoodSaver machine. The jar sealer works equally as well in packaging liquid foods, such as jams or chocolate sauces, as it does for dry goods, such as brown sugar or spices. While vacuum packaging is not a substitute for traditional canning methods, it does keep food fresh three to five times longer than keeping it in a plastic food storage container in the refrigerator. --Cristina Vaamonde

Summary: A great add-on for your FoodSaver! 2008-09-23
Comment: It's no secret that the bags for the FoodSaver are expensive. Enter the Wide Mouth Jar Sealer. This is great for items that you want to keep vacuum sealed in between uses. Think "dry goods" such as beans, macaroni, corn starch, brown sugar, etc. For those that are not familiar with exactly what this does I will give a brief expanation. With this jar sealer you can take a standard canning jar, put the desired product inside, slap on a good canning jar lid, and vacuum seal it using the 'canister' button and the vacuum hose that came with your FoodSaver. You then remove the jar sealer to use again and again. As long as you are careful when removing the canning jar lid it can be used over and over again. The companion product to this is the Regular Mouth Jar Sealer which is the same but for regular mouth jars.

Summary: Works great when you use the right "trick!" 2008-09-19
Comment: HERE'S THE TRICK I FOUND: (1) make sure the tubes are well-attached to the white jar sealer part and the machine (2) PUSH DOWN ON THE WHITE JAR SEALER while the machine vacuums. It works great!

I figured this out when I noticed that there is a rubber ring inside the jar sealer top and if it's not pressing down enough on the jar, the vacuum isn't as effective.

I read the previous reviews with interest - what contrasts of opinions! I just tried this product and found it to work perfectly. I tried both the wide and regular mouth sealers. They both work perfectly well. I used new lids. I did not heat them before using.

I didn't have to use two lids, either, when I pressed down on the jar sealer top.

As far as the reviewer who tested the amount of air in the jar - I just know that it is impossible to achieve such a tight seal on the jar lids without a proper vacuum. Removing the lids is as difficult after this vacuum sealing as it is with traditional canning - there is definitely a great amount of air gone from the jar to produce such a tight seal. So, in my opinion, it does a great job.

Make sure the tubes are connected properly and firmly, press down on the sealer while it's vacuuming and you should get great results.

I'm thrilled with this product.

P.S. The wide mouth jar sealer did come with a plastic attachment tube, but the regular mouth jar sealer did not.
Also, I don't recommend storing any powdery substance (i.e. flour) as the vacuum process sucks some of the flour up and under the lid, making the seal inefficient. It's best for heavier substances like rice, beans, cookies, nuts, candy, etc.

Summary: Great product - money saver! 2008-08-01
Comment: FoodSaver may be kind of shooting themselves in the foot with this product. We found their plastic canisters to be rather expensive, and there were too many reviews saying people had experienced cracks in them. I'm sure a plastic canister would be good in some circumstances, but when we found out there are wide-mouth 2 quart canning jars (you generally only see 1 quart and 1 pint in the stores), we bought the last 3 cases of them we could find locally (6 jars in each case) and ordered this Jar Sealer. What a great product!

Just so there's no misunderstanding, this product is removed after the jar is sealed, and the lid stays put - just screw on the jar ring and put away whatever is in the jar. At first it was a little unclear whether we had to get one of these attachments for each jar, but that's not the case.

Now we can use relatively inexpensive (and durable) ½ gallon canning jars (as well as the smaller sizes) for various food items, take out what we need for use, and immediately vacuum-seal the jar again with the remaining contents. A case of six 2 quart jars was just over $8.00, so for about $25 (plus the one-time cost of the jar sealer attachment of course) we have 9 gallons of storage capacity to use over and over, without concern for cracking like the FoodSaver plastic canisters apparently do too often. And replacing the sealing lids when they finally need replacing is a minimal expense. This also sure beats the cost of the plastic sealing bags that generally can only be used one or two times, when we can use these jars over and over instead of the bags. There is a place for the plastic bags, but we're finding so far that a whole lot that we initially started putting in the bags can just as easily (if not easier) go in the jars. Additionally, the jars keep powdered or liquid products from going into the vacuum sealer much more easily than the bags laying flat at the mouth of the sealer.

All around, these easy to use and very inexpensive for ongoing use, with almost nothing to replace or crack, and easy to store.

One tip: read the instructions carefully. DO NOT open the FoodSaver lid first when it's finished, or it will repressurize the jar. Follow the instructions and remove one end of the plastic tube first - there will be just a little puff of air as air re-enters the system, but it doesn't go into the jar and destroy the vacuum in the jar. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Summary: A little fiddly but gets the job done 2008-06-02
Comment: I've used this a couple of times now. It seems to work fine, but it doesn't like just any lid. I re-use old lids for storage (but not for canning) all the time. I could usually tell which one of my recycled lids wouldn't work. They were the ones with visible blemishes to the gasket or were somehow dented around the rim. It did take me a couple of tries with some of the good lids though. All in all, I like this device. Just be patient with it. Sure beats using disposable plastic bags all the time for storage.

Summary: great idea 2008-03-26
Comment: This is a very inexpensive way to be able to use your WIDE mouth mason jars to use with the foodsaver. Almost every household has ball mason jars and if not, they are quite inexpensive to buy at a hardware store or department stores. The 1 quart size wide mouth BALL mason jars are great to use when after a while you need to transfer food from the larger canisters to smaller containers and the mason jars will definitely do the trick. Just simply put the lid on and put this jar sealer down tight, connect your hose and push the canister button on the foodsaver and it will vacuum out all the air. The lids are reusable as long as you don't dent or bend them. You can also get extra lids. A package of 12 lids for about $2.50 at almost any store. I like the WIDE mouth jars for the simple reason that the opening is bigger. As many of you know that the foodsaver canisters are rather very pricey so this is a very good alternative way to go. You can get a case of 12 for about $9. This particular wide mouth jar sealer is good for BALL and KERR wide mouth mason jars. I store peanuts, chocolate chips, walnuts, confectionary sugar, raisins, just to name a few things that I store in the pantry. Then when the canister that once held a box of cereal starts to get down low, i use the mason jar to store cereal as well. Highly recommend to get the jar sealer.
