Any baker of specialty cakes and pies would love this pedestal display plate from Godinger's Olympia collection. Crafted of heavy crystal, the two-piece set consists of a scalloped-rim plate attached to a tall pedestal base, on top of which sits a high carousel-style dome, decorated with a linear spoke-like design and leaf pattern. The dome rises to a smooth knob that allows a dramatic lifting of the lid to show off a favorite chocolate cake. A multifaceted ball underneath the plate adds brilliant sparkle. Godinger, renowned for both silver and crystal pieces for the home, is the brand choice of many newlyweds. As with any fine crystal, the dishwasher should be avoided for its dulling properties. Summary: Gorgeous, heavy piece 2008-01-20
Comment: This is one of the most elegant covered cake stands I've seen. It's well-proportioned, unlike many other cake plates that look almost squat. The crystal is quite heavy, and the dome rings like a bell when it's lifted off the base. And it arrived intact, thanks to very well-cushioned packaging.
There are a few tiny bubbles visible in the thick crystal, and the seams are not terribly hard to find--the flaws are slight, though.
I wasn't able to find detailed dimensions for this piece when I was shopping for a cake plate, so here they are: the interior diameter of the dome is 10.25 inches; and the maximum cake height is about 4 inches, although berries or something could definitely be piled on top.
A lovely piece to enhance the presentation of cakes.
