Amazon.com Review

The 8-inch blade on this knife features a curved cutting edge and a blunt back; chopping, dicing, and mincing duties are simplified--and made safer--by utilizing a quick rocking motion on the cutting edge. Part of the popular Four Star series, the hand-honed blade is made with Henckels' Sintermetal Component Technology (SCT), which allows three different grades of steel to be combined to form a single piece, fusing together the blade, bolster, and tang. What does this mean in layman's terms? It means a strong, high-quality knife that will last a lifetime.

Founded in 1731, the J.A. Henckels company is not only one of the world's oldest cutlery manufacturers, it's also one of the most well respected, creating bestselling knives guaranteed to last a lifetime. --Kim Harwell

From the Manufacturer

First introduced in 1976, the Four StarŪ Series is one of the world's most popular knife lines. Four StarŪ knives were designed and developed in close cooperation with renowned professional chefs. The result was a fully forged knife with a unique molded handle. The Four StarŪ line contains knives for all tasks, and includes the following open stock knife types: parer, bread, peeling, sandwich, utility, carving, chef's, granton edge slicer, santoku, and others. Four StarŪ knives are also available in a range of block sets and gift sets.

A Higher Standard in Knife Construction

Four StarŪ knives are precision forged from a single piece of exclusive-formula, high-carbon, no-stain steel under the all-new Sigmaforge standard. As a result, Four StarŪ knives have improved quality consistency, lasting sharpness, and perfect geometry. Sigmaforge one-piece construction also provides high precision and improved stability of the blade and steel structure, thus improving cutting-edge retention for lasting sharpness. In addition, Four StarŪ knives use J.A. Henckels' Friodur ice hardening for corrosion resistance, a process that also contributes to cutting-edge retention.

It's All in The Grip:

The Four StarŪ series features high impact polypropylene handles that are permanently bonded to the knife blades without any gaps. These comfortable handles are break-proof, sanitary, and colorfast. In addition, the super bolster provides weight, insures safety, and adds balance.

Features:

  • SIGMAFORGE 1-piece, precision forged construction: Provides perfect geometry, high precision, and improved stability of the blade and steel structure, thus improving cutting edge retention for lasting sharpness.
  • Laser controlled edge: Is sharper and stays sharper longer. Has a more consistent blade angle.
  • Friodur ice hardening: Maximum no-stain properties and more blade strength. Improved resistance to corrosion and pitting.
  • Super bolster: Provides weight, insures safety, and adds balance.
  • Full rat-tail tang: Provides a proper balance and greater strength.
  • High-carbon no-stain steel, an exclusive J.A. Henckels formula: Non-staining, non-rusting.
  • Hand, precision honed blade: Is sharper and stays sharper longer.
  • Bonded polypropylene handles: Comfortable molded handles and food safe
  • Dishwasher safe: Easy care (Although hand-washing is recommended by J.A. Henckels).
  • Full warranty: J.A. Henckels stands behind all its knives.

Summary: Excellent Knife 2008-08-16
Comment: This knife was purchased to replace in the kitchen a 9" Henckels Four Star Chef's knife. Nothing wrong with the original, except the handle got scratched up a bit when I was dividing perennials in my garden. Now the original will be used to divide perennials while this one will be used to cut veggies on the cutting board. The original knife is close to 25 years old and still going strong and I expect this one to give me an equal amount of service or more! Great knives for all your cutting needs in the kitchen or in my case, the garden.

Summary: Had it for 5 years and still love it 2007-05-19
Comment: I use this knife for everything except dicing some veggies. For that I use an 8-inch Global chef's knife because of its thinner blade. The Global is great for that, but doesn't have the heft to do most other kitchen jobs. My prior chef's knives had wooden handles and exposed rivets. Never felt that I got them 100% clean. With the Four-Star line, no problem.

You will love this knife.

Summary: Henckels Four Star is a Five Star 2007-01-26
Comment: I just bought this for my wife. I had looked at Al Mar kitchen knives (Gerber, a fine knife maker doesn't make any that I could find) but I bought this Henckel because of the fine reviews chefs had given it. It arrived the other day and my wife has had the opportunity to try it out in the kitchen in the preparation of two dinners. She was stunned by the difference over her old, cheap knife. This German-manufactured knife is extremely well-made, perfectly balanced, and razor sharp. And I can count on this carbon stainless to deliver up a very nice edge when it comes time to sharpen it.

I used it myself to test it out and I've got to say Henckel really pulled out all the stops on this knife. It'll handle anything you need a knife for in the kitchen...in spades. For my money this is most definitely a five-star product and I'll probably buy another one for a gift as it is truly a fine and expensive looking knife.

Summary: Wow what a knife 2006-11-10
Comment: If there is only one thing in your kitchen that you can afford go top dollar on, make it your chef's knife. Of all the various appliances in my kitchen, all those stuffed drawers and overloaded shelves, the one thing that gets used the most is my chef's knife. And this one makes my cooking sooo much easier. It's sharp enough to cut eighth inch slices off a very ripe roma tomato. Try that with one of those serrated things..Jobs like trimming fat from meat are safer too because its so sharp it takes less pressure. And its easy to keep it that sharp with a Henkel's sharpining steel. Makes a great wedding gift. Something so very useful and it will last a life time too.
