Unicorn Magnum Plus Pepper Mill 9-in.
- Material: ABS plastic body with nickel plated steel mill
- Dimensions: 9-in.
- Origin: USA
- Cleaning & Care: Wipe with damp cloth and dry thoroughly
Product Description
Many of our authorities thought this 9" tall, contemporary black pepper mill was top notch- it met all our criteria: a comfortable grip, a grind that is easily adjustable, and a nut at the base that is independent of the loading ring in the mill's body--so there's no need to reset the grind after refilling. It holds over a cup of peppercorns that are easily added through the large hole on the side of the mill, and works very fast & efficiently, according to Cook's Illustrated, who includes it in their "Best" category. The grinding mechanism has nickel-plated heads that will maintain their cutting edges and won't rust. The Magnum Plus has a lifetime guarantee. Not battery-operated.

Comment: I actually bought the 6" model, and bought it directly from Tom David website, which offered $4 shipping. It's excellent - large capacity, easy to load, easy to use. I'd give it five stars, but it's slippery to use if your hands are even a little wet.

Summary: Perfect in almost every way...... 2008-08-05
Comment: I LOVE LOVE LOVE pepper and put it on pretty much everything I eat. Did I mention I really like pepper? OK, for the review of the product. I purchased this based on the reviews I read online and was not disappointed. The only thing that is a downfall is the locking mechanism for the filler is a twist and unfortunately to unlock it, it is the same way to grind. Since these two are next to each other you CAN accidentally twist open the filler locking mechanism. In my opinion, this is SO MINOR that I could care less, if you are someone who is concerned then don't fill the mill to the point where the peppercorns are level or above the filler hole PROBLEM SOLVED. Now for the good things. This thing puts out so much pepper per turn it is insane, absolutely love it. Turning my old mill I would sometimes do it at an angle, I carried this habit with me when turning the magnum and when I tipped it straight up I noticed a whole pile of pepper slid down the inside, that's how much this thing puts out, you have to make sure you mill close to straight up. The filler hole is EASY to fill, unlike some of the other reviews you may read, took no more than a few minutes. As someone else pointed out in a review, the actual mill is made in Italy, says right on it, they obviously know what they are doing. If you haven't decided to purchase this already then just take my word for it, YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!

Summary: Outstanding Performance, Especially For Cooking 2008-06-25
Comment: I just got this to replace the William Bounds 8-Inch HM pepper Mill which I've had for about 7-8 years (Mine has a wooden body, but other than that is exactly like the linked one). I was overall pretty happy with that model, but starting 4 or 5 years ago I started having trouble with its grind size selection ring (see my review of that model for details). The problems worsened until I finally decided it was time to replace it.
I did quite a bit of research before dropping this much money on a pepper mill. From what I've read, this is the mill to have. Cook's Illustrated gave this model top honors. It is Alton Brown's pepper mill of choice. And to be fair, it is only about 10 bucks more than the William Bounds it is replacing (though that one was a given to me as a gift).
I've had the Unicorn Magnum for a little over two months now, and I've been very impressed.
The good:
- Grind size is easily adjustable via a screw at the bottom (pretty typical)
- Maintains consistent Grind size
- Does a _much_ better job delivering very coarse grind (cracked pepper) than the William Bounds _ever_ did
- Puts out a huge amount of pepper per turn
- Very large capacity
- By far the easiest pepper mill to refill that I've ever used
The bad:
- Very modern design that might not fit in with all kitchen decors (I prefer the look of my previous mill, but given the improved performance, I'll gladly sacrifice form for function in this case).
Seriously, that's the only bad thing I can think of to say about it.
More About Output:
- I don't have pre-ground black pepper in my kitchen - I haven't for years. With the William Bounds, it was very tedious to grind out even just a teaspoon for a recipe. But this thing can knock that out in one or two turns.
Spilling Peppercorns Not An Issue:
- Contrary to some reviews I've read, I haven't had a single problem with accidentally opening the fill-door and spilling peppercorns out. I'm 6'2" and have pretty big hands (I mention this because at least one review said that this mill isn't good for folks with big hands).
Tips:
- Use a funnel to help load - yes, peppercorns will clog up, but the hole in the side of this is large enough that you can shake the funnel to keep things moving.
- I just bought some Tellicherry pepper to go in this mill. It's my first time owning tellicherry pepper. It's definitely worth the extra expense.
Conclusion:
- I highly recommend this pepper mill. As I said, I've only had it for a couple of months, so I don't know how the longevity will be, but the reviews are encouraging.

Comment: I've been using this pepper mill for about 2 months and I love it. Throw out all your other pepper mills; even your battery-electric powered ones as well. Approximately 5 twists will yield a level teaspoon of fresh ground pepper. This thing rocks!
