Summary: Not only does it cut vegetables, but meat too! 2008-10-03
Comment: This goes not only for this model, but all similar products. The vegetable holder does not work well for all vegetables, such as carrots and bell peppers. So you may be tempted to go free-hand mode. If so, you do not want to be distracted. I was and it cost me a trip to the emergence room, 10 stitches to sew the end of my thumb back on. It went right through it and left it sitting on the cutting board. OUCH!
I see that others have had the same misfortune. I should add that I had it set on #4, which translates to about 3/16 to 1/4 inch slices. That's how much of my thumb was removed. A few days ago, I wanted to slice something with it, but decided not to - no nerve. I will probably discard it - after removing the blade.

Summary: Slicin', dicin' good fun! 2008-09-25
Comment: I have a Benriner mandoline and thought it fairly useful but it can't hold a candle to this Zyliss! I LOVE that there is no need to change blades to obtain different cuts, and it's very easy to turn the dial to get varying thicknesses in slicing. Its pop-out stand is steady and I love the clever way you can position this over a bowl to slice right into the serving container.
I use it probably 6 to 8 times a week for various items - it slices fresh tomatoes thick or thin, makes short work of slicing an onion, and I make all varieties of "fries" with the julienne setting - great for zucchini, crookneck, pumpkin, butternut, sweet potato or any other veggie you care to make fries from - I simply cut, toss with a little olive oil, place on a foil-lined baking sheet and sprinkle with a little salt, then pop into a preheated 450* oven til browning. Alternatively, you can also deep-fry any of the above.
I like that the slicer folds and stores easily - after I wash it, I simply fold it about halfway and lay on its side on a paper towel to dry overnight.
The ONLY complaint I might make of it is that because there are no blades to interchange, you can only make ONE size of julienne cuts - but that size is perfect - just about McDonald's French fry size!
Oh, and you can also dice an onion - peel and cut off the top end (leave the root end intact) and run your knife down the onion every 1/4" to 1/2" - not all the way through, let the root end hold the onion together - then turn the onion perpendicular to the cuts you made and use the julienne setting - you will have a diced onion pronto! Haven't tried it on other veggies but I'm guessing you could do the same for potatoes for hash browns or whatever other veggie you want diced.
I'm very glad I bought this!

Comment: Product works well but is dangerous. Is very difficult to open and close. Blade is where lock is.

Summary: Outstanding! 2008-09-23
Comment: I received my Zyliss a few days ago and it's fantastic. I read a lot of reviews about different mandolins, as this my first one, and was hoping that the negative things that have been said by a few people about this one are not true. This mandolin slices perfectly and i also like the french fry size. It is soooo easy to use, it is sharp and safe, and it is small and easiy stored. This is a winner. Before I thought that this was not a necessary appliance (hey, I love using my knives)but after I sliced lemons yesterday - my goodness, so perfectly, I realized that I will love this tool and use it all of the time. I recommend that you watch the video - it only takes two minutes.

Summary: LOOK NO FURTHER - GREAT DEAL 2008-09-21
Comment: This is extremely well built. Just turn the knob for blade thickness selection - not changing blades. It folds up small for storage, dishwasher safe - though it just rinses off quickly and hasn't stained. Fits perefect over a bowl (or countertop) and does not slip. I don't believe you could get a better designed, better built product at ten times the price. (Glad I decided trying this first before the expensive stainless steel one).
