For over 20 years, kids and kids at heart have giggled at the jumbled, goofy nonsense poems of Shel Silverstein. And now, lucky readers can listen to his mad meanderings as well with this 20th anniversary edition of A Light in the Attic, which includes a CD read by the author himself. Eleven classics, including "Twistable, Turnable Man," "The Dragon of Grindly Grun," "Prehistoric," and "Backward Bill" are performed by the late virtuoso of verse, while the tremendously popular book contains every one of the original poems that made Silverstein's name a household word: "Poemsicle," "Hula Eel," "Standing Is Stupid," "Moon-Catchin' Net," "Meehoo with an Exactlywatt," and dozens upon dozens more. Silverstein's amusing, cartoonish line drawings are every bit as familiar and beloved to readers as his poems. Gone, but not forgotten, the creator of the irresistible poetry collections Where the Sidewalk Ends and Falling Up, left an indelible mark on children's poetry. (All ages) --Emilie Coulter
Product Description

Last night while I lay thinking here
Some Whatifs crawled inside my ear
And pranced and partied all night long
And sang their same old Whatif song:

Whatif I flunk that test?
Whatif green hair grows on my chest?
Whatif nobody likes me?
Whatif a bolt of lightning strikes me?...

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, Shel Silverstein's A Light in the Attic is now available in a special edition containing the classic hardcover book and a CD of highlights from his Grammy Award-winning album.

Here in the attic of Shel Silverstein you will find Backward Bill, Sour Face Ann, the Meehoo with an Exactlywatt, and the Polar Bear in the Frigidaire. You will talk with Broiled Face, and find out what happens when Somebody steals your knees, you get caught by the Quick-Digesting Gink, a Mountain snores, and They Put a Brassiere on the Camel.

From the creator of the beloved poetry collections Where the Sidewalk Ends and Falling Up, here is another wondrous book of poems and drawings.

Customer Rating: 5 Star
Summary: Excellent children's book 2008-11-02
Comment: I distinctly remember both my parents and grandparents reading to me as a child. Later, when I grew up a little, I was able to read for myself. Shel Silverstein's "A light in the Attic" and "Where the Sidewalk ends" were among my favorites on the bookshelf. Many of Silverstein's poems have just the right essence of "weird" to appeal to the mind of a child and the sketches that accompany some of the poems seem to add a little punch. Many of his poems like "The little Boy and the Old Man" will remain a part of you long after you outgrow everything else.

Buy "A Light in the Attic". Buy "Where the Sidewalk Ends". Read them to your children. Encourage your children to read themselves and keep both books on your shelf for your grandchildren. You won't be disappointed.

Summary: Sold as new, but was used 2008-05-21
Comment: I was very disappointed to receive this book which was sold as new, but which had a handwritten inscription in the back indicating that someone had previously owned this volume.
The book is excellent and the CD with it is wonderful. I just wish it didn't have the writing in it. Will Amazon send me another? I think they should and I shouldn't have go to the trouble and expense of returning this one. We'll see.

Customer Rating: 5 Star
Summary: As wonderful as Shel's other books 2008-01-29
Comment: A light in the attic is a great book just like Shel's other books. I have so much fun reading it to my children. This is a wonderful collection of poetry for children. This is the perfect example of what children's books should be... fun.
Another must have book for any fan of Shel Silverstein is Boetry by Beau Beaudoin. His books are often compared to Shel, Dr. Seuss and Tim Burton. What my kids love about his illustrations are they are in color.
