Fans of Willy Porter, Ben Harper, and G. Love will all want to check out Jack Johnson's engaging folk- and blues-inflected pop. Born in Oahu, Hawaii, Johnson, a former surfer and film-school graduate, has a knack for acoustic ballads whose calm surfaces hide a subtle but strong lyrical undertow. "It seems to me that 'maybe' pretty much always means 'no,'" sings Johnson on "Flake," which features crony Harper on slide guitar. Production by J.P. Plunier (who also handles Harper's recordings) is simple and uncluttered: acoustic guitar and drum tracks share the foreground with Johnson's easygoing vocals, which evoke everyone from G. Love (who recorded Johnson's "Rodeo Clowns" on his Philadelphonic album) to Nick Drake to Willy Porter. And while Johnson may not have Porter's guitar chops, these songs have a relaxed beauty and understated depth that reward repeated listening. --Bill Forman

Summary: Astounding in every way! 2009-04-02
Comment: No only do I love Jack Johnson's music, the mastering is phenomenal. If you have the audiophile gear to really appreciate the post production work, this is a must have CD. It is my number one choice for demo-ing my music room's system to friends, family and the like. To just see their expressions is such a treat. Jack is not just playing - he's right there with you. Fantastic work!

Summary: Wonderful and Peaceful 2009-01-14
Comment: Jack Johnson writes songs that are laid back with a jazz and blues feel mixed in to provide songs that are easy to just relax to.

Understated playing which let's the songs breath with good lyrics and a playfulness. Towards the end of Fortunate Fool you can hear Johnson provide a musical nod (and a grin it seems) to another song.

Sit down on the couch, lower the lights and just listen.

Summary: Groovy tunes. 2008-12-30
Comment: This is great music for anyone who likes groovy acoustic guitar tunes. It is verry mellow, but also very upbeat. I always seem to be in a better mood after listening to this and I can't help but tap my foot and sing along.
