Summary: Not "Perfect" 2010-03-16
Comment: I purchased this scanner because I had to scan many strips of 35 mm film and slides. This scanner has a 6-frame-long 35mm-wide frosted panel in the lid that lights up when you inform the epson software that you are scanning film. The epson software included with the scanner is, as usual, irritating to work with. When scanning 35mm negative filmstrips there is a "feature" that detects the edges of each frame and then crops and displays each frame. I was not able to find any way around this "feature". Personally, I would have liked to see the entire strip sometimes, especially when the frame detection is off. It will, on occasion, mess up the framing so that you see one half a frame in one image and the other half combined with a second frame in the next image, and so on. I found the best way to handle this is to re-scan with the strip flipped lengthwise. Another issue is odd-sized negatives, which this scanner will not scan. If the software permitted you to display the entire strip, then it would be possible to scan the larger negative in sections, and then photoshop the results. However, I was not able to find a way. Instead I used a light-table face-down on the scanner. It works, after a fashion, but that's a solution that can be used on *any* scanner.

Comment: I bought this scanner to digitize my slides and B&W film. It works great and is relatively fast. It does scan an amazing 4800x9600 dpi. Almost no one needs this kind of resolution because it makes an absurdly large file. Gigabytes. If you have terrabytes of space to store them, I guess you can do this but the added resolution in even a large print is pretty much undetectable. A 3200x3200 scan makes a 60 mb file. Even that can chew up hard drive space pretty fast. Once your scan resolution exceeds your printer resolution, you are pretty much wasting electrons.
The placement of the connections for the usb and power cords at the front right is a bit puzzling and inconvenient. I can't imagine why that was done. That said, this scanner works great for film and slides and I certainly would not recommend any other of the dedicated scanners that cost so much more and deliver no better resolution. This was a really excellent buy.

Summary: Very good scanner for the money 2010-03-14
Comment: I was having my negatives printed by a photo shop, but they couldn't handle all of the sizes I had. I was able to get this scanner, with little effort, to scan negatives from 35 mm, 126 and 226 film. It did a good job with color and Black & White, though I did not find that it did the one-button color correction for old faded negatives, as advertised. My graphics software took care of that issue, though. I also saved a bundle of money.

Comment: I have used many types of scanners. I recently upgraded my computer to Windows 7 and needed a scanner that would be compatible and this did the trick.
In addition, it was shipped extremely fast and I definitely needed it for an important job I had to do.
Anyways, I used to have a Visioneer flatbed along with Nuance's Paperport Professional 10. I was worried about the software that would come with this scanner from Epson, but it turned out to be even better than the Paperport Professional 10 software that sells for like $150!!!
You can easily modify the software to do exactly what YOU want it to do.
You can easily scan documents right into Adobe PDF files into the exact folder you want on your computer (any folder - you can easily decide where).
The images are great! They are precise and you can easily select whether you want a photo type image or a document type image, etc...
I scanned over 1,000 pages for my important job and it was a breeze!
The thing I LOVED LOVED LOVED about the software is that it has an "add a page" function. This means that when you are scanning let's say a packet consisting of 10 pages - you can select "add a page" and the software will automatically stack it as a single PDF file of 10 pages instead of you having to scan 10 different pages and then COMBINE those 10 pages using adobe acrobat. This feature alone saved me TONS of time!!!
The scanner is awesome and worked seemlessly and was a cinch to install. I don't have a need for any OCR technology so I didn't test that part of the software out.
I give this scanner an A++++++++++++++
