Amazon.com Product Description

Expressly designed for students and casual business users, the Columbia Umatilla cyberpack offers something that traditional day packs do not--a padded slot for a laptop. The side-access compartment protects your notebook computer should you accidentally drop the pack, take a bumpy bike ride across town, or stow it in an airline overhead. As a result, you can safely take your laptop just about anywhere. Of course, the Umatilla isn't just a laptop bag, as the main compartment can also hold notebooks, folders, and other items, while the smaller compartments can stow your school supplies. And thanks to the MP3 player pocket--which includes a rubber cord port--you can listen to your favorite tunes while strolling across campus without exposing your audio player to the elements.

The Umatilla is no slouch from a comfort perspective, either, with a full-length padded back support and S-curve shoulder straps with EVA foam. The padded shoulder straps ensure extra comfort even when the cyberpack is fully loaded, while the back support's wicking knit polyester material is designed to keep you cool on hot afternoons. And busy users will dig the expandable industrial-mesh water bottle pocket, which accommodates a 1-quart bottle (sold separately) to keep you hydrated. Other details include abrasion-resistant zippers, an organizer panel, a key clip, reflective safety accents, and a daisy chain sewn onto the exterior for quick item storage and access.

The Umatilla, which measures 12.25 by 18.5 by 9 inches (W x H x D), is backed by a limited lifetime warranty.

About Columbia Sportswear
Founded in 1938, Columbia Sportswear Company has grown from a small family-owned hat distributor to one of the world's largest outerwear brands and the leading seller of ski-wear in the United States. Columbia's extensive product line includes a wide variety of outerwear, sportswear, rugged footwear and accessories. Columbia specializes in developing innovative products that are functional yet stylish and offer great value. Eighty-year-old matriarch Gert Boyle, Chairman of the Board, and her son, Tim Boyle, President and CEO, lead the company.

Columbia's history starts with Gert's parents, Paul and Marie Lamfrom, when they fled Germany in 1937. They bought a small hat distributorship in Portland, Oregon, and named it Columbia Hat Company, after the river bordering the city. Soon frustrated by poor deliveries from suppliers, the Lamfroms decided to start manufacturing products themselves. In 1948, Gert married college sweetheart Neal Boyle, who joined the family business and later took the helm of the growing company. When Neal suddenly died of a heart attack in 1970, Gert enlisted help from Tim, then a college senior. After that, it wasn't long before business really started to take off. Columbia was one of the first companies to make jackets from waterproof/breathable fabric. They introduced the breakthrough technology called the Columbia Interchange System, in which a shell and liner combine for multiple wearing options. In the early 1980s, then 60-year-old Gert began her role as "Mother Boyle" in Columbia's successful and popular advertising campaign.

The company went public in 1998 and moved into a new era as a world leader in the active outdoor apparel industry. Today, Columbia Sportswear employs more than 1,800 people around the world and distributes and sells products in more than 50 countries and to more than 12,000 retailers internationally.

Summary: Backpack for Everything 2008-01-27
Comment: I use this backpack for everything. It is so sturdy that I can carry my laptop & cord, 2 full size text books, and a 1.5" binder with very little discomfort. The straps are very wide with sufficient padding to make it easier to carry. I love the place to store an mp3 or Ipod while walking to class and it has enough pockets and places to carry everything for school, camping, hiking, etc.

Summary: Laptop May Fall Out 2007-11-14
Comment: I bought this backpack a while ago, despite my reservations about having the opening for the laptop compartment on the side. The obvious danger is to forget closing the zipper, and it won't take much for your laptop to go flying ... Naturally I tried to be careful about closing it, but one day I must have been distracted or in a hurry, and when I took off the backpack, my laptop fell on the floor. Many other computer backpacks also have a strap that secures the laptop, and prevents it from moving around; this one doesn't. Otherwise it is quite nice and comfortable, but I won't use it for laptop duty anymore.

Summary: great overall design - avoid the lighter colors 2007-10-18
Comment: It's hard to find a decent backpack with laptop pouch. Not too bulky, flimsy, or expensive, something comfortable, roomy, with sensible pockets. The Columbia Sportswear Umatilla Cyberpack fits the bill. Avoid snow/grey color, gets dirty fast. A little on the small side and doesn't sit well, flops over. Overall good.

Summary: cool back pack 2007-05-26
Comment: I was skeptical about my purchase of Columbia Umatilla Cyberpack, but as soon as the product reached and I opened the box all my doubts were cleared. It is really a "cool back pack" as it has lots of space for all the things which a college/anybody who is always on the move likes to carry.Only disadvantage is that it cannot stand on it's own when you put it on the floor. On the whole I am happy with the product and using it to the fullest. Will recommend this product to anyone who wants to have a back pack for less price and with all those pockets.
