Summary: Better light than MOST LED's, but battery hog 2008-11-04
Comment: I have a number of LED lanterns because they are easy on the batteries. But the light doesn't usually fill a good size room (only the Energizer "Flip" Trailmaster with a 200+ hour run time is decent in this respect. But this Rayovac fills the room with bright, 'even' lighting. The MAJOR problem is that, even with 8 D batteries, it only lasts 6 hours on high, and 12 hours on low (although there's only about a 20% difference in 'perceived luminosity' between Hi and Lo. So keep it on low to conserve the batteries. But if you want the best 'trade-off', the Energizer/Eveready LED Flip lantern (IF it's still made...because I can't find it online anymore), is the all-around choice. But if you're just going to hold a 6 hour meeting in a room/tent, then put this Rayovac on a 6-8 feet or higher object (where it won't cast shadows), and you'll have the best, most pleasant illumination. It's just NOT made for a one-week camping trip, or emergency weather situations. You'll use-up the 8D batteries in 1 or 2 nights, and also, it's 'massive'.

Summary: Great post-hurricane! 2008-09-12
Comment: We have been without power after Hurricane Gustav for 12 days now. This lantern has become my second favorite possession (after our gas generator). It puts out a great amount of light and, with conservative usage, we just had to change batteries for the first time at Day 9.

Summary: Seems to work great! Very durable. 2008-08-17
Comment: Seems to work great! Very durable. I have not used it enough to know how long the flourescent bulbs last. Bought for myself at home and at the office for power failures. I imagine it would work great for campling too, but too heavy for a backpacking trip.

Summary: A BIG Light 2007-01-20
Comment: I like this lantern: tough, durable, rubbery, bouncy, masculine, outdoorsy. It uses 8 D batteries, is quite large, and is as bright as a 40 watt light bulb.

The compact fluorescent bulb gives a set of batteries a good lifespan. It will light up a room during a power failure, or light up your campsite with lots of powerful light. As such, it is a joy to use.

I also like that the bulb has slight pinkish hue, so you can look right at the bulb with less pain than the Coleman's competing lanterns, although subjectively it sure seems to give less light than an equivalent Coleman lantern.

Postscript.
We have used a few times. Despite its large size, it has proved to be very useful and versatile. I like it much better than the competing Coleman products. We also noticed that when the batteries get run down, the tubes will not turn on; however, they will go on if you turn on just one set of tubes rather than both. So, you get a bit more light before the batteries totally die, but use this condition as a dire warning to put in fresh batteries ASAP.

Summary: LIKE BATTERIES? 2006-06-15
Comment: THIS DOES GIVE NICE BRIGHT LIGHT but the bottom is hard to unscrew You have to to put all those batteries in it 8D BATTERIES AND be careful when it won't light. You have to find the bad battery. Maybe it's only 1 but you replace them all. The handle has tendency to fall off but if your careful, it sure will light up the night. If it were not for the batteries, 4 stars. and where do you find the light bulbs?
