Summary: Control Scheme 2007-10-18
Comment: I have been playing this game since it was released in the United States, and I would like to correct some of the errors that I have seen in these reviews. The main error that I have observed is that people seem to think that the controle scheme is fataly flawed, that it inhibits the player, this is not true. Monster Hunter is a game where you have a lot of control over your character, most would say to much control. For example, you have to control both the direction of your weapon: Right stick, and your camera: D-pad. Unfortunately most people are used to games where you do not have to do much multitasking on the controler, Monster Hunter however forces you to do this. Honestly, I had to relearn how to hold and use a controler to play this game, but, it was worth it. Now, here is a list of errors I have observed in previous posts, and my nearly 4 years worth of experiance view on them.
Error 1: You cannot control the camera and move at the same time.
This is true, if you hold the controler with index and middle finger on the sholder buttons, and use your thumbs for moving and pressing the face buttons. However, as I had to learn, if you "claw" the controler, that is place your left index finger on the D-pad, your left thumb on the left stick, and your middle and ring finger on the sholder buttons, you will find that you can control almost every aspect of your character at once.
In the rare case that you dual claw, you can press and interact with every button on the controler while still controling the joysticks. As I said, it takes some time to learn, but it pays off in the long run.\
Error 2: Combat is sluggish/You move and attack very slowly.
This statement is not an error, per say, but the mentality behind it is. The game mechanics were made extreemly ballenced, in fact,(this is something that in my personal experiance is rare,)you actualy do about 4-10 times as much dammage on each hit as the monsters in this game do. Asside from the realism of your armor actualy preventing rediculously stong attacks,(for example in many games you(armored) take as much dammage as your unarmored enemies), the speed at which you fight is quite realalistic, think about it. If you had a 6 foot long 2 foot wide slab of steel on the end of a handle, how fast do you think you could swing it around? You are not Cloud, do not think that you should get to fight like him in every game.
Now, most of the reviews here have been right, this game has a lot of potential, and much of that is demonstarated in later titles of this franchise, but it is not a bad game, just a hard one.

Have you ever looked down the blade of a sword, only to see a Dragon the size of small building staring back? This is just one of the situations you will find yourself facing in Capcom's Monster Hunter.
To start, the graphics in this game are some of the most believable in a game to date. The environments are a decent size, broken up into about 8-12 small area's. But the way Capcom has done it, you get the feeling you are truly in an expansive world. Subtle things like the rolling clouds, or the billowing smoke of an active volcano, just add to an already immersive experience.
Gameplay may be the drawback for some, as the control scheme can take some getting used to, and may frustrate the novice. The unique thing about this game, is upon slaying a monster, you have 1 minute to carve it up so to speak, and take pieces of it's body to create armor and weapons. Each monster giving different pieces needed, and all having unique attributes to lend in creating your items. Huge blades, and guns to match can be crafted to boot. Slaying monsters isn't all, there are capture quests, and item gathering as well.
Off-line this is strictly a single player run, but on-line gameplay allows up to 4 warriors on any one mission, and just adds to the quests and items you already have. If nothing else, give it a rent. Aside from a steep initial learning curve and difficulty, this game truly rewards the patient player.

Comment: I played this game for a couple of days, and ended up throwing it up on ebay. I have to say it starts out really interesting, but it ends up getting ridiculous with the tasks you have to do. I thought the game was just mediocre at best. I know alot of people really want this game, but I didn't think it was anything special.

Comment: I think that this game is a great title for the ps2 but there was some flaws about the game, but what games doesn't have them. I manage to work around them, other then that this is a great game. I HOPE THAT CAPCOM COMES OUT WITH ANOTHER ONE FOR THE PS3 WITCH IS ALSO REALLY AWSOME. Overall I think Monster Hunter is one of ps2's greatest titles to be remember for a life time.
