Amazon.com Product Description
The Motorola MotoZine ZN5 combines world-class innovation from two industry leaders, Motorola and Kodak. The MotoZine is the first phone to incoporate Motorola ModeShift and Kodak imaging technologies, resulting in an easy and immersive mobile imaging experience that will help you seize inspiration and share images from wherever you roam to friends and family around the globe. Putting image capture first and foremost, the MotoZine features a 5-megapixel auto-focus imager, high-resolution landscape screen, a Xenon flash, and one of the fastest click-to-click times available. Photos can also be uploaded via a Kodak Gallery Link and instantly shared to an online Kodak Gallery in one simple click.

The MotoZine mobile phone becomes a full featured camera with ultra-fast 5 megapixel auto focus lens, low-light optimization, and a bright Xenon flash.
This phone is compatible with T-Mobile's MyFaves service for unlimited nationwide calling to your five favorite people, and its quad-band GSM/EDGE cellular connectivity makes it a great companion for global roaming. It also offers integrated Wi-Fi networking (802.11b/g) for fast and easy uploading of photos on your home network or while on the go at hotspots. You'll also enjoy all your favorite music thanks to the multi-format digital audio player and stereo Bluetooth connectivity, as well as an integrated FM radio. Other features include Bluetooth for handsfree devices and pairing with Kodak Bluetooth-enabled devices (such as printers), 350 MB of internal memory, MicroSD memory expansion (up to 4 GB), access to email, and up to 5 hours of talk time.

T-Mobile Service
The Zine operates on GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz networks and can handle high-speed data connectivity via T-Mobile's EDGE network (which stands for "Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution"). This high-speed, mobile data and Internet access technology is fast enough to support a wide range of advanced data services (with average data speeds between 75-135Kbps), including video and music clips, full picture and video messaging, high-speed color Internet access, and email on the go.

It's compatible with T-Mobile's myFaves service, which allows you to call up to five of your most common contacts--on any network, even landlines--without using any of your minutes. Learn more about myFaves from T-Mobile.

Download cool new games, HiFi Ringers (real songs by today's hottest artists), MegaTones (instrumental versions of songs), and wallpapers quickly, as well as stay connected via the Web, instant messaging, and email.

Phone Features
Using breakthrough ModeShift technology from Motorola, the Motorola Zine ZN5 presents you with only the controls you need, at the time you need them--instantly transforming from phone to imaging device and back with the touch of a button. Simply slide the lens cover open to illuminate ModeShift Technology, transforming the full-featured mobile phone into an ultra-fast 5-megapixel camera, complete with auto-focus, low-light optimization, and a bright Xenon flash. When you're done, just slide across the lens cover and ModeShift instantly transforms your camera back to a phone.

The MotoZine is the only mobile phone to have Kodak Imaging Technology that can be instantly combined with Kodak Perfect Touch Technology for brighter, more vivid pictures on the spot which look noticeably better than pictures created without the technology. Auto-focus locks in less than one second and there are no delays when taking one photo to the next. With one touch, you can view all your photos right from the home screen--no menus, no searching. You can take advantage of multiple capture modes, including panorama, which automatically stitches together continuous shots taken on the horizon line into a single, extended image.

Built to shoot and share, the MotoZine offers a plethora of ways to connect your phone to printers, your PC, the Web, and even your TV:

  • Send your photos while on the go via MMS, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth wireless technology.
  • Photos can be uploaded via Kodak Gallery Link and instantly shared to the Kodak Gallery online in one simple click. You can also send images to your favorite photo site via ShoZu.
  • Use Kodak EasyShare Software to quickly transfer pictures from your phone to your PC via USB. With Kodak EasyShare Software you can organize, edit, print, and share your photos.
  • Display instant slideshows on your TV with just one cable, or print directly to your Kodak All-in-One inkjet printers using Bluetooth.

This Motorola phone includes the innovative CrystalTalk technology, which automatically accounts for background noise during a call and adjusts the audio quality based on ambient noise conditions to provide the optimal conversational experience. CrystalTalk also reduces the volume of the background noise picked up by the microphone during a call, making it possible to be more easily heard over the phone while in a noisy environment.

Handsfree communication is easy thanks to the Bluetooth wireless connectivity (version 2.0), which includes profiles for communication headset, handsfree car kits, and printing to Bluetooth-enabled printers. With the A2DP Bluetooth profile, you can stream your music to a pair of compatible Bluetooth stereo headphones. You can connect your laptop (either via Bluetooth or wired USB) and enjoy dial-up networking--surf the Internet, send email, and access files from a server.

Other features include:

  • 2.4-inch display with 240 x 320-pixel resolution and 262K color depth

Summary: Camera replacement for me, Nice phone was a perk 2010-02-17
Comment: Got the phone for free about 8 months ago via Amazon.com and I'm wishing T-mobile still sold it for my other lines. I bought the phone for the camera.

Pros:
* Nice camera, easily shares photos, *very* quick camera bootup time (just slide cover over and only about .75 second delay before the picture is taken
* Clear call quality, including a powerful speakerphone
* Extensive feature set (WiFi, FM receiver, Media player, messaging, email, bluetooth including push services)
* Good predictive text engine
* Dig the keylock switch on the side. I'll miss this in whatever other phone I have
* The hidden photo buttons are groovy. "Trash" and "Share" buttons light up when you are in landscape photo review mode
* Purple everything? At least the phone looks good

Cons:
* The phone lacks a bit in CPU power, which you can tell when you first boot the phone, end a call, or are moving around in menus a lot. There's a distinct lag for these actions, but it's not a big deal
* Low battery warning vibrates and buzzes (wasting more battery...) One of those features that are really bugs
* Purple everything? At least the phone looks good

Surprised to hear about so many people's trouble with the phone. I haven't had any issues with sync, phonebook, etc that weren't caused by my own tinkering with ModMyMoto.

Summary: Great phone plus much more! 2010-01-28
Comment: I LOVE this phone. The reception, call quality, and camera are excellent, which are the main reasons I chose this phone. I have fun with the Motorola phone tools which is a fabulous photo editing software that comes with it. The mp3 player and FM radio sound quality are excellent especially with the high-quality earbuds that are included. The speakers on the phone are really loud. You can use entire songs for ringtones. The screen has a high resoulution and you can watch short videos, including Youtube videos from the browser. It is easy to use with Windows Media Player. I like MotoConnect that lets my phone share photos, music, calendar, addresses, etc. with my pc. I use the bluetooth to share lots of music and photos, too. Email is handy; I can read, manage, and send E-mail, including photos. Texting can be tricky because the keys take a while to master, but after I started using my nails, I found the keys responsive (and pretty, too). Unfortunately T-mobile disabled Java apps, but a ModMyMoto website, GSM arena, and Motorola's website help get around some of the disabilities T-mobile put on this phone. My phone used to shut off alot, but I learned to put some paper on top of the battery to hold it in place so it no longer shuts off; ever. It has taken some getting used to, but the longer I use it, the more I realize how much my Motozine ZN5 has to offer. It is an excellent phone, camera, mp3 player, plus so much more.

Summary: Ok phone, nice camera, keys stick 2010-01-01
Comment: I've had this phone for over 6 months now.

Pros:
Best thing about this phone is one they barely advertise - it has really, really good call quality. I've had a difficult time with past cell phones talking to my elderly mom because she just can't understand. With this one, we have no issues. Many of my co-workers can't tell when I'm on my cell vs. land line.

Another good thing, it seems to get a better signal than my old t-Mobil phone. Used to be that Verizon phones couldn't even get a signal at my house. T-Mobil just barely. When I got this phone, I suddenly had all the bars most of the time. Very nice.

Menus are easy to use and intuitive.

In regards to others' comments. I've never had the OS freeze.

Camera is great although the flash is a little too intense. I took this phone/camera on my last vacation - it did great. No reason to carry a camera too any longer - even when I want good pictures. Very freeing.

Cons:
The keys stick - badly. Say, if you push the '1' key - it will just stay down. This makes entering phone numbers difficult. Texting basically impossible. I returned the phone once due to this issue. I got a new one. It worked for awhile, but now is experiencing the same issues. And, just as some keys stick in the down position, some won't push at all. Also, sometimes the wrong key will enter. For example: even when I'm extremely careful to push the '*' key, '9' will be entered instead. It is very difficult for me to call into teleconferences due to how hard it is just to get the '*' key to depress in a timely manner.

My screen on the phone I returned also got stuck 'on' for awhile. I attribute it to the stuck keys as well. I was very reluctant to buy a non-flip phone. The problems I've had with this one are making me promise myself when this contract is up, that I will switch back.

It's very difficult to get the USB port flap open.

The wired headset that comes with the phone apparently distorts my voice quite a bit - at least according to my co-workers. So, it's hard to make hands free calls. I haven't tried another.

Software wasn't really thought through:
Stored contacts display phone numbers in tiny, tiny, tiny font. The screen is HUGE - it would be nice if I could use a bit of it to display the numbers larger.

Often, phone numbers are displayed without hyphens in the logical locations - it would be nice if they had built this into the software. (i.e., 1234567890 vs. 123-456-7890)

Font choices are limited - none that easy to read.

No options for displaying larger fonts.

Summary: Good replacement for 3 devices. Moto-slowness on occasion. 2009-12-24
Comment: I've used this on a daily basis for 8mo now. Some of the same gripes, same praises as others.

Good candidate to replace ipod, phone, and camera in one device

Pro:
feels well made: heavy, solid, and scratch-resistant
Easy to use lock slider to prevent pocket calls
Very good music player
Great camera, replaced my point-n-shoot. GREAT camera!
Easy usb connectivity. charges though usb @ same time. cool.
Good battery life
Generally good call, voice quality
Customizable
Can hold 4gb+ memory cards
Wireless is slick

Cons
Occasional Moto-style slowness: random hangs. A restart every now & then helps.
Have to remove batt to get to memory card
Originally, would turn off when set down. Poor connection b/w batt & phone. I tweaked the connectors & made the batt fit a bit better with (drum roll please) DUCT TAPE. No problems since
Slow web

I do no contact synching or texting, no bluetooth. so use the above review @ your own risk. For folks (like me) who wanted one good device for phone, music, and camera, this was and still is a decent choice w/o all the other bells & whistles on smartphones.

Summary: DOES NOT serve its primary purpose 2009-11-04
Comment: This phone has an excellent built in camera as many has stated, however this phone is plagued with all too many problems. If you dont believe me, try getting three motozine all of them having to be returned for replacement. I usuallly discover new problems with each replacement.

Some common problems but may not necessarily affect your phone are

-entire OS freezing at times (anywhere from sending a pic to attempting to open a new incoming text)
-phone synchronization problems
-adrees book deleting itself from SIM card
-address book recopying contacts
-unnecesarily re-entering the same contact twice
- bluetooth mode not always working
